Applying for unmarried partner visa in country

I entered UK on student visa and completed my degree. I was then given 12 months leave to remain on SEGS catagory. Snce last 4 years i have been living togather with my girlfriend who is on Work permit. i would like to know that can i switch to dependent visa in country as unmarried partner of my girlfriend.

I have been told that you CAN switch in country to an unmarried partner visa as long as your original visa was issued for OVER six months.
