Austria as self-employed artist

Post by boyboyboy » Tue Nov 15, 2011 2:37 pm

I am a UK citizen and have a job offer with a firm in Austria.

My partner is a Canadian citizen and wants to move with me.

We are unmarried, and can't document that we've been living together long enough to get common law status.

He is a self-employed musician/artist, with a decent portfolio of recordings and awards and has been supporting himself doing this.

I am struggling to find any information about the process and documentation required for a Künstler visa for him to stay for a period of a 12 months.

Can anyone advise?

How long have you been living together?
What documentary history do you have together?
Is he planning to work on art, or do regular wage employment in Austria?

We've been together about 6 months, with some bank statements at a common address.

He'd be looking for work within the arts. Touring and playing shows. He wouldn't be looking at regular wage employment.

He can prove his legitimacy as a self-sustaining artist. And I would be financially responsible (and could provide a letter outlining this)

6 months together will in most cases not give your partner free movement rights in the EU. Sorry.

http://www.bmeia.gv.at/en/embassy/ottaw ... hange.html is about Canadian specific options for Austria.

Note that if you want to be in Germany, then there are young people working holiday visas that will allow them to reside and work.

I am not sure of Austrian specific options. Check the Forum referred to from https://eumovement.wordpress.com/eu-cou ... o-austria/

Thank you very much for your input. I know that he won't be able to come as a family member. I have been trying to get information about the paperwork required for the Kunstler residence permit.

We will try calling the embassy.

Küntsler visa...

Post by Stinktier39 » Wed Mar 13, 2013 1:07 am

Grüß Gott!

I have the same question as boyboyboy. I want to move to Österreich with my girlfriend (an Austrian citizen) and work as a self-employed artist. The Küntsler permit was easy to find, but I wonder how much artistic evidence one has to provide. Since I'm working at an A-1 German "proficiency" level, the 9-page application form looks especially intimidating. Has anyone worked in Austria as an artist? Thanks for your help!

From studying German myself (and having been advised by tutors at a reputable language institute) I can tell you that an A-1 proficiency level will most likely be insufficient for employment purposes. A level of B-2 at least is recommended.

Viel Glück!
