Biometric residence card

I am renewing my Tier 1 (general) visa in April 2012. When first applying for this visa, I completed biometric testing at the British Consulate in Australia but no biometric residence card was issued. Do I need to have the biometrics recorded again? Or do they have the data stored (ie fingerprints) and can issue the card automatically? Just trying to reduce the timeframe as much as possible.
