British Citizenship and foreign marriage certificate

Post by pred02 » Mon Jul 31, 2023 11:51 am

Hi,

My wife is applying for her UK citizenship application. She has been in the UK for 6 years and acquired her ILR a year ago after being in Tier 2. I was naturalised UK citizen in 2016.

As part of her application she needs to submit her marriage certificate. We got married abroad in the EU but never translated or registered the marriage in the UK. What do we need to do to the marriage certificate before she can send the documents for her application, does it need to be translated with apostile?

She does not need to go through the citizen of British national route as she has been here more than 6 years but I think she needs to submit the marriage certificate anyhow.

Thanks,

Any document not in English needs to be translated.

If your wife applies in her own right ("5 years route") then she doesn't need to provide a marriage certificate.
Also, if you do need a translated certificate perhaps the registry office in her country can provide an EU type certificate?
For my birth certificate I have an EU type standard extract from the register of births which shows all details in five(?) different languages.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.
