Referees are allowed to put "Available on Request".
As you say, they may not be contacted in straight forward application, however they may be contacting in applications with convictions.

Or in application where the identify of the applicant is less straight forward or the character is in doubt, etc... it would make sense... but maybe they just pick refs randomly and contact them...

Can someone please help me to confirm if my referees' will meet the requirements set out in Sec 5 of form AN.

1) British Citizen, age 50+, Works in Royal mail as Post office official, knows me since 2008

2) Non-British, age 35, my University friend back home (before coming to UK) and now he is in final phase of getting his Phd (Research assistant) from University of Leeds. He knows me since 1997.

Looking at the requirements, they say one must be British over 25 and the other can be of any nationality but professional standing. Would UKBA consider my friend who has done B.E and then Masters in Computer Engineering, currently doing Phd as professional?

Many Thanks London Applicant! - The posts have been very helpful.

Now, I know that my manager (who works for a VAT registered company) can attest my form.

This is perhaps a late response to the original post which enquired inter alia the basis on which a professional who could be a referee was selected.

I was discussing this issue with a work colleague of mine, who has consented to be a referee, and she opined that the basis for being a professional referee is that the person can be disciplined by an external, government regulated body if they are found to be lying, as UKBA may have limited powers in this field.

Thus, if somebody is a member of a professional body, such as the General Medical Council (which is regulated by law), the body can hold the person accountable for lying or for bringing the organisation into disrepute, etc and can discipline them. Likewise, directors of companies can be barred from directorships by Companies House and civil servants can be disciplined by internal procedures at work. Thus architects affiliated to the RIBA (set up through a Royal Charter) would count, while a software professional or a research scientist who are not affiliated to a professional body, would not count, under this logic.

Her explanation appears to be logical and fits the indicative list of acceptable referees. This should go some way in answering OP's questions.

Hi Guys!

Anybody knows if a research scientist (has PhD) who sometimes reads leactures would qualify as a professional referee?

I'm really struggling to find one. My other options would be a pre-registered nurse (but she is due to graduate only next year) or a teacher with NCQ certificate level 2, but not with QTS documentation (as far as I know). They look even more doubtful to me.

Any ideas?

Hi my manager is an Actuary ,a fellow of the actuarial institute. (FSA) Can he be my professional referee?

Looking at the list is any manager going g to be considered a 'professional'?

My second referee would be a nuclear physicist ,he doesn't belong to any professional body but
Would he be considered professional?

You only need one professional and one British national over 25 years old referee.
Yes you can use them both

Am I okay to use my referees?

First referee, 23 year old journalist, Irish national.
Second referee, 23 year old journalist, British national.

Both have known me for over 4 years.

The other referee must normally be the holder of a British citizen passport and either a professional person or over the age of 25.

Thanks.

Hi all,

Am I OK to use HR director as my second referee? (for my application)
Also, can the company manager act as a second (professional) referee? (for my husband's application)

Thanks!

Hi all,

So confused about this!

My husband's first referee is a 29 year old, personal friend, who is a British citizen.

For the second referee, I am completely stuck! Having gone through the accepted 'list', I think we can meet this one - Director/Manager/Personnel Officer of a VAT registered Company. We have a friend who is the OWNER of his own business which is VAT registered. Will this be ok?! I know they say Director, Manager, Personnel Officer of a VAT registered company but as the owner, surely he meets all of these?

Could someone PLEASE clarify that these two referees will be ok?! This has been a nightmare!

One of my referee was my British friend, other was British CEO of the company I work in. So owner is fine, I'd just ask him to write CEO (as presumably that is what he is).
Being British is a state of mind.
