Just a quick question
When the ceremony start back do we need to pay 80 pounds for group ceremony? Or it’s included in British naturalisation application? We paid £1349.20
Thanks 🙏
The ceremony fee is included in your application. The fee for a private ceremony is NOT.

A ceremony by video conference would be ideal
Yeah but they need to send the naturalisation certificate and I don’t trust Royal Mail. They have lost many letters of mine in the last few months.

This is what I got from my southwark Council

Thank you for your email.

For the moment, we sadly do not know when the Government and the General Register Office will allow us to reconvene citizenship ceremonies. In the mean time, we have to follow the guidelines and avoid non-essential face to face gatherings until safety measures are put in place.

We want our colleagues and our prospective citizens to stay healthy with you being at the forefront of our minds.

We have requested to conduct citizenship ceremonies by video link, this proposal is currently under consideration with the Home Office.

I was approved in Feb, they asked £310 for private ceremony or wait for 2 month for group one. So frustrated, living in the worst council of this country.

I think the Home Office should regulate the Private Ceremony Fee. Maybe put a cap on the fee so that councils are not able to charge more than a certain figure. Currently, the prices vary significantly from one council to another. In Aberdeenshire it's £25, £60 in Warrington and up to £400 in some councils in London all for a 10-15 minutes private ceremony.
I am not a lawyer and do not claim to be one. All my comments here are based on my opinions, experience and interpretation of the appropriate UKVI guidance documents and immigration rules.

When I contacted my council (Westminster), I was informed that they have not received any certificates since March 2020. They said they will start offering free private ceremonies initially due to social distancing. They also said they are hoping to start the ceremonies in July 2020.

I contacted again my council in Redbridge and they told me that they are not ready yet to start with the private ceremonies. They also said that they have not received any certificates since March and that they will resume citizenship ceremonies with those whose ceremonies were cancelled back in March.
I reckon we will probably have to wait until August or September to take part in our citizenship ceremony.

I wanted to share a good news with all. I received an email from my local register office notifying me that private ceremonies are available M-F, cost of a £100. I think that's promessing.
The only thing is my wife did not receive the document from home office yet other than a reply to my email 2 weeks ago stating "Your citizenship paperwork will be generated in coming weeks when current restrictions due to Coronavirus are eased." with that said I'm sensing a disconnect between home office and local authorities.
Which council is this?
Luton
I also got this from Luton too, they are being a bit cheeky. Out of those 5 days surely they can dedicate some time to clear the backlog while practicing social distancing and all. Basically all they are saying is it is not safe to do ceremonies, but for £100 we can look the other way!!
Knowing Luton you will be about 5 to 10 people in that "private ceremony".

The normal private ceremony is 80quid but they have upped it to £100.

A private ceremony is only for the person who has booked. It is not a small group of people.

The £100 for a private ceremony is completely separate and in addition to the group ceremony fee of £80 that was already paid with your application fee. Councils set the private ceremony fee themselves, it has nothing to do with HO.

If ceremonies are not back by the 13 July what is the situation?
Have you checked with the local council? If so, what have they counselled?
Thanks Simon. Sorry for the late reply.

They, Ipswich, told me they didn't know and to contact the home office. I've emailed HO and the reply target is 20 working days!

After a long journey in getting Citizenship we can't afford (time, money and mental stress) to go through it again.

Appreciate any thoughts or advice.

The government has also allowed places of worship to open and allow private prayers. There is no excuse for councils to not allow private ceremonies.

If they continue with their excuses then we should contact someone from the government, maybe the local MPs because I fail to understand why councils cannot allow private ceremonies and why the HO is not allowing video ceremonies. This is getting frustrating now.

Probably because...

The council can't hand out naturalisation certificates it does not have. And video ceremonies will also likely cause a minor issue with handing over certificates remotely.

There are other possibilities (before 2004, one could take the oath/affirm in front of a local magistrate or Commissioner of Oaths), but the government needs to get around to changing the rules to allow that. And currently it is somewhat busy.

Remember that this may be urgent for you, but is neither urgent nor important for the government, who has got much bigger fish to fry at the moment (including, ironically, the Brexit discussions on fishing).

Yes agree, they dont bother, its infringement of natural right freedom of movement. Some people need to fly urgently and they cant coz of unsure unseen decision from councils or registrar

What is preventing you from flying on your foreign passport and ILR BRP card?? Absolutely nothing. There is no 'infringement of natural right of freedom of movement', you are free to travel.

Unfortunately those of us with travel documents can't even travel to Europe without a visa anymore which is expensive and often makes your application less likely to be approved if not impossible

First ask question and then think

HO extended upto 6 months for ceremony which is going to expire 1 month and few days, so I'm not sure when they will ask me to come for ceremony or they will extend another 3 months

Try to call or email HO and your council and ask them that your invitation is expiring in a month. Seeing the queues outside primary and Bicester village, there shouldn’t be any excuse that they need to extend your by another 3 months. At least you can have a private ceremony.

Citizenship Ceremony cancelled due to Covid-19

Post by chand92 » Tue Jun 16, 2020 11:36 am

Hi all.

i just wanted to know that anybody has received ceremony letter from Home Office, as i spoke to my local authorities and they are saying that citizenship ceremony will start on next Thursday 25/06/2020. If you got approval letter from Home office give us your Ref NO and then we can book a place for you.

If anyone is registered with Hackney council for the citizenship ceremony, you can join their waiting list once your application has been approved. You do not need to wait for your invitation letter. You will however need to provide your Home Office/Case ID number to join the list. I received this advice directly from Hackney Council.

Which council is this? I spoke to my council yesterday based in Swindon and they said they have not received any guidance from Home Office to restart ceremonies nor have they received any certificates since March and obviously they can't do ceremonies without certificates. They said maybe since there's a lot of backlog in London, some London councils are under pressure to restart ceremonies but that's not the case outside London.
