No need to be anxious, I appreciate it's a stressful wait, but if there is an issue HO will contact you.

Recived this email in response to my complaint.
By way of background, registration is not an automatic process, and we need to make several enquiries before we can reach a decision on whether to grant citizenship. Enquiries are not limited to criminal records or to a person’s activities within the United Kingdom. Nor is there a limit set out in nationality law on the time taken to carry out those enquiries. As part of the application process, the Home Office routinely conducts enquiries with other government departments and external agencies. The extent and length of time taken to complete these varies according to the circumstances of each application.

The progress of outstanding enquiries is regularly monitored with the agencies carrying out these enquiries on our behalf. It is only when we have the results of the enquiries that we can reach a decision on whether citizenship should be granted. We do not, ourselves, carry out these checks and we cannot, therefore, be sure how long they will take in each case.

We appreciate that UKVI website gives the following information in relation to waiting times for naturalisation applications:

"All applications for citizenship are subject to enquiries to ensure that the statutory requirements have been satisfied. Because of these enquires, we anticipate that applications may take up to six months to complete. Some applications may be dealt with more quickly and some may take longer, depending on the nature of the enquiries to be carried out".

You will usually get a decision within six months - some applications can take longer. For further information please visit our website at:

www.gov.uk/apply-citizenship-indefinite ... ve-applied.

As you will note, it is also made clear on the website that, in some cases, these enquiries may take longer than average to complete. You will appreciate the need to be careful, and thorough in such matters.

Our records show that our most recent emails to you on 31 January and 5 February, explained that our service standard is that we aim to complete 95% of applications within six months. However, regrettably this is not always possible. We further advised you that we are conducting a series of mandatory checks and enquires as part of your son’s application, and these are still on-going. As these checks are not completed by UKVI we are unable to give a time frame on your son’s case being resolved.

Some of these enquiries are carried out by external agencies on our behalf and can sometimes take longer than six months to complete. We will endeavour to conclude your son’s application at the earliest opportunity, and we will write to you as soon as the necessary checks are complete. Please be assured that your son’s case is under active consideration and as soon as we are in a position to reach a decision or if we require further information, you will be notified accordingly.

Thank you for your patience whilst we investigated your complaint and whilst we progress your son’s case. I hope that my response is helpful, and that it clarifies the current position.

Applications from abroad take longer than average. You need to wait longer.

There is no estimating such. Check timeline threads, some quick others not so quick.

Which extra information did the request?

I applied 3 weeks ago. Our documents arrived 2 weeks ago but I have not received confirmation of that or info about biometrics. How long did it take untill they first contacted you?

Applicants don't normally get acknowledgement of application or any communication unless clarifications are needed. You only applied 3 weeks ago, so you need to be patient.

Yes. You can pursue actions to complain which you fund here british-citizenship/6-months-plus-waiti ... 43483.html but they can take as long as they want.

Definitely yes, it takes as long as it takes and sometimes some applications don't move fast enough no matter what actions you take fro your side I.e. it takes as long as it takes.

I thought I would provide an update as I also applied from abroad for my daughter born abroad under section 3.2.

I received an email from MMST workflow nationalitysupportteamfmt@homeoffice.gov.uk stating it will take longer than 6 months...with no explanation given just also stating that enquiries take time etc. I applied 14th November.

I replied but have not received a response.

May I ask which email you are receiving a response on? I sent mine and my daughters original passports as part of the application and need them back if the process could take an unknown amount of time...

If all of your papers are in order you might possibly get a response on the 8th month after your biometrics appointment
