MN1 Form advice : applying from SA

hi all
New member and just looking for some useful assistance.

completed MN1 form for my daughter online and now sending through the supporting documents, applying from SA but i was born in the UK and live3d there till i was 39.

i am sending through her SA passport as indicated , but i only need to send copies of my passports ( i have the last 3 spanning 1994-2024) do i just copy the page with my details or every single page? no need to send mine?

her grandmother is in the UK and its asking for every page of her passport, is that correct?



for evidence i was in UK for 5 years i have added
Enrollment and graduation from University.
NI Number and details of numerous P60/P45
Details of mortgage held in the UK
Details of bank accounts held during the time.
Details of employment for 15years.

is there anything else i must add as i am now living in SA for 10 years and i don't have all the other information at hand.

If you are british born/british by birth, then surely your child is british by descent and can apply for a passport directly?

Or is your circumstance something different being born in the uk??

she was born in South Africa as i emigrated 10 years ago when i married a south African.

i was born in UK and lived their all my life ( 39 years)

So again, if you are british by birth, a child born abroad is british ny descent automatically and can apply directly for a british passport.

You cannot apply to register a child as british if they are already british by descent automatically.

Apply for a british passport.

on the MN1 guide it outlines the below

section 3(2) birth abroad to parents who are British by descent and have lived in the UK or a qualifying British overseas territory

where do i go for the route you mentioned?

You didn’t need MN1!

Yes, UK doesn’t care about dual or multi citizenship.

That is there are no regulations about that.

Yes, she is a dual citizenship. Having an sa passport doeant take her right to a british passport away.

This doesn't apply to as you are british born in the uk and not british by descent (someone born abtoad to british parents). You are british otherwise than descent.

we were told the MN1 route by someone who was in same position and did that
i have another daughter to do also but haven't started her application

we already submitted the MN1 form now just waiting to send the physical docs
feel like i went the wrong route

I have underlined the bit to pay attention to.

Having been born in the UK (presumably to at least one British parent), you would be a British citizen otherwise than by descent.

Your daughter born abroad would automatically be a British citizen by descent. If she were to have a child outside the UK, she would need to register that child (your grandchild) under that Section (assuming that the law hasn't changed by then).

You will need the following documents to apply for your daughter's passport

Your daughter's birth certificate listing you as a parent
(if she was born before 2007) the marriage certificate of the parents (your partner and you)
Your (the British citizen otherwise than by descent parent) birth certificate
(if you were born in or after 1983) the birth certificate of one of your parents and their marriage certificate

Were they born in the UK or abroad? If they were born abroad they would have been a British citizen by descent and they would have required an MN1 registration for their own children born abroad.

British citizenship is pass automatically to only one generation born abroad.

MN1 registration generally (not always) won't be required if the British citizen parent was born in the UK.

They should reject the application because the applicant (your daughter) is already a British citizen. Not sure if they will refund the fees though.

Don’t send the documents.
You can cancel the application and get a refund as you haven’t had the biometrics done yet.

so in basic terms

i was born in the UK in 1972
lived there till 2011

i married a south African in 2011 and had my daughter in 2012 in south Africa.

so i should cancel the application and apply for passport as opposed to citizen MN1 form

Apply directly for a British passport with

Your daughter's birth certificate listing you as a parent
Your (the British citizen otherwise than by descent parent) British birth certificate

Be aware that a first passport for a British citizen child abroad can take between six to sixteen weeks, so don't make plans to travel on the British passport before getting it.

And yes, you should cancel the MN1 application.

it says this above but when i log in i cant see section 6 further actions ..cancel application

MN1 is not a visa application and there’s no priority for nationality applications- suggest go with route advised already.

cant find the section where it says section 6 to cancel

Sorry you are stuck with this, we don't all have sight of all the various UKVI forms and web options available. Hopefully the member who gave you details will come back to explain. In the meantime perhaps try again in case there are systems problems.

im sure there is a way to instigate the refund, just need to find the way.
then i can apply for the passport

I know this may not help, but have you tried calling the helpiline and see if they can advise on how to cancel the application?

guessing this is the only option as i cant seem to be able to cancel via the login page
