Hello all who have had success with their UKF applications while being outside the UK,

I am currently in the process of applying for my UK citizenship (UKF) while studying in the USA (and during a pandemic...). I have a couple of questions about the process that I would be really grateful if anyone could answer:

1. What is the process like for providing the biometrics information? Is it done in person or online?

2. How long did it take for your passport/ ID documents to be returned?

3. How has COVID-19 affected the procedure for your application (for those who have applied within the last year)?

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Laura, do you not have a birth certificate at all? You will need your birth certificate for this application, as well as your passport.
Thanks krotoa. Can anything be done if it's missing and the place of registration doesn't have any other evidence that it was registered? Thanks.
In South Africa we can complete a late registration of birth and obtain a birth certificate that way. Not sure what the rules are in Nigeria. Would it be possible to register your birth now?

Also, the form requests a birth certificate naming your biological father that was issued within one year of your birth. If you don't have that, you will need additional documentation such as I had to provide.
Thank you for your time. In Nigeria, an adult cannot register his or her birth. You can only get an age declaration. Then again, I know of someone who has a laminated certificate. Can he use that for himself? We read that they don't accept laminated birth certificate. Thank you!

Hello laura , this might be coming a bit late but if u've not gotten help yet, am here to give you a good news . I understood your situation very well because i was in ur shoes at some point . In my own case, i couldn't find my birth certificate at birth too but i went for another option. If you go through the ukf guidance u will see the required ducuments as listed below.

If you can provide genuine and reliable documents, we will recognise a man as
your father in the following circumstances:
• He is named as your father on a birth certificate issued within one year of your
birth, or
• A DNA test report shows he is your father, or
• A court has ruled that he is your father, or
• You can provide other evidence that is sufficient to establish paternity.

Note the essence of this document is to establish paternity

Dna test - So if u don't have a birth certificate as u've said then u can summit a DNA results from any uk approved centers in nigeria if u reside in nigeria or any part of the world as long as is ukba approved center, u will not be forced to do this to make your claim and it has to be voluntarily done, then this could replace ur birth certificate requirements. (Pls note this option will work if your father is still alive)

Court ruling / Court order - in this option you need to request a court order in the high court in nigeria with supporting documents that you father is your father ( how to go about it) -- get a lawyer to help you fill for knowledgement of parternity that your father is your father with the supporting ducuments like proof of pictures on your naming ceremony at birth, proof that your father pays for your up keep, school fees and so on generally just to satisfy the court truly your father is your father whether is alive or not and if your father is alive then u can have him make a voluntary aknowledgement of paternity , here you have 2 in 1 options, if you are successful with that then the court will issue a court order / declaration that your father is truly your father. This can also replace your birth certificate.

Other sufficient ducument to establish paternity -- this option is also not that complicated, sufficient documents is not fully explained in the guidance but the most acceptable document is will. Meaning if your father is late and you are included in his will as his daughter. Then this is also acceptable to replace your birth certificate.

The whole idea is simple and the home office has allowed this options to accommodate different situations. Eg (having your birth certificate issued at birth )or ( if your father is alive you can get a dna test done to establish paternity ) or (court order by satisfying the court with sufficient proof whether you father is alive or not and if his alive you can have him go to the court to make a voluntary a knowledgement of paternity before the judge or commissioner of oath at the high Court and have it notarized ) or ( if you are included in his will if he has one )

Pls note you can only get this right if you have authentic documents
******So when you have either of the 4 options listed above with your father's British birth certificate then you can apply for the british citizenship by registration, under this sections 4i, 4g & 4h figure out which section that applies to you.

Also you have options of ducument u can provide from your father too
Father's birth certificate or
Father's British passport or
Father's certificate of registration or
Father's certificate of naturalisation

Legitimacy and paternity is key thats all you need to proof.

note for you to find your self in this category of ukf it means your father is not legally married to your mother .and If your parents later marry then you may be a british citizen already and you have to apply for another category of british citizenship.

In conclusion with my own case as have said that at some point i was in your shoes , i currently have my application submitted and i did my bio metric 3/11/2020 and waiting for the outcome. My father is british/nigeria and not legally married to my mother, i was born in nigeria so am nigerian with the help of the uk nationality law amendments now, i qualify to register as a britishcitizen, my father became british in 1974 which was 6 years before i was born , at the beginning of the application i could not find my birth certificate issued at birth and my father is late now but i have his certificate of registration as britishcitizen, first and second british passport issued in uk with me here in nigeria, i got a lawyer in the uk and she explained my chances to me so i went for the court order option because i have supporting ducument to secure that though it took about 6 months after several sittings at the high Court before the judge later granted the declaration. So that was what i submitted in place of my birth certificate .

I hope laura gets this information and i further advice anyone that know anybody in this situation to read and get helped.

When did you apply?

1. In person photos/prints
2. As long as the application takes, the citizenship vignette will be applied to your passport when approved.
3. Applied in July, currently at 6 months + 1 week

HO is stating it is taking around 6 months, but may take longer due to COVID-19.

Hello fam, thanks to everyone that shares information. May our heart desires be met. Thanks to the Nigerian that advised me some time ago. It's unfortunate that I can't see the name of the person to mention and appreciate specially.
Please there's a new development in my TLS contact personal account. I would like someone that has done biometrics like me to confirm if it's the same as theirs. There's a place where you have OCBE customer go to the next step and DNA customer pay here. I just noticed that the OCBE statement has left there and only the DNA customer pay here that is showing. I can access it, it's showing me steps on how to pay for DNA.
I still don't understand what's going on as my representative who happens to be my Dad hasn't received any DNA request from HMPO yet.
Pls if anyone understand what's going on, I would pls like you to educate me.
Thank you all.

Hi Laura Akpowowo,
Firstly i will like to encourage you by telling you that my application was successful and i received my letter 08/03/2021 based on the advice i gave you i my last contribution, i am also awaiting my younger sister's approval letter too.
With regards to the new development you mentioned, i have some few questions, have you done your bio metric successfully ? If yes, which of the tls outlet in nigeria? did u went back to the tls page after bio metric before you discover this because i don't think you have any business with the page once you've done your bio metric. If you done your bio metric successfully please ignore and await the home office decision on your application if the home office needs additional documents the will contact you or your representative. Be aware decision requires a long waiting time .

I hope you get this advise on time

Hi everyone,

So I'm American, and I applied for British Citizenship (submitting everything) on Dec. 16, 2020. I have yet to hear a response, and am a bit anxious as I've had zero contact since then. Only right after I submitted my biometrics, was I told that it was submitted successfully -- which is great.

I'm just curious if anyone else has an idea on what the wait time is like?

I understand with covid it can take longer than 6 months, but was curious what anyone else might have to say. :)

Thank you!

Hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Tabitha and I am new here but this is not a new topic for me. I had a hand in changing this law to create the UKF route. It's so great to see everyone benefit from the change in law that Antsmall and I campaigned successfully for.

Currently, I am working with Project to Register Children as British Citizens (PRCBC) on pushing for changes in the upcoming Nationality & Borders Bill. We are seeking to have the UKF/UKM application process streamlined as much as possible. That said, I am seeking to have the government remove the biometrics and citizenship ceremony part of the route to citizenship that are required of UKF/UKM applicants. We are also concerned since the government will be extending the UKF/UKM route to BOTC children in the bill that there will be a repeat of past and current issues with acquiring citizenship. Most notably was back in 2016 when those applying from the US were sent letters from UKVI that applicants could go to Canada or Mexico to do their biometrics(!).

What we would like to know is if anyone would be interested in assisting us with any concerns or problems you have run into (past/present) which relate to any of the following:

  • Collecting documentation required for your application (proving paternity, accessing legal documents, etc.)
  • Length of time between sending your application and receiving a decision from the Home Office.
  • Hardship in paying the citizenship ceremony and/or biometrics fees.
  • Hardship in accessing biometric centers and the embassy/consulate for your ceremony.

Overall, we want to highlight as much as possible to the policy makers with the hope that it can be remedied in time for when the UKF/UKM BOTC route to citizenship happens.

Moderators, I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct way to go about this, or the correct thread, and I don't want to step on any toes. Because I'm newly registered I don't have the capability to DM any of you.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hello Fam. I want to express my gratitude to everyone on this forum and especially to those who had taken time to answer my questions. Its with great joy that I announce to the house that my application has been approved and I have been booked for a citizenship ceremony next week.
I still do have a question though. What are my benefits as a British citizen? Is it possible for me to relocate to the UK with my family?
Thanks for your responses!

You are free to move to the UK. Your family will need visas and must meet the requirements for a visa before they can move with you if they are non British. You can only sponsor a spouse/partner and children, not any extended family.

Nite that you be ineligible for any government benefits for at least 3 months once you arrive as you would fail the habitual residence test.

I am American also. I submitted my Biometrics in April 2021, and received by approval for citizenship on May 19th. I'm currently waiting for my ceremony invitation letter. It's been almost 6 months. I emailed citizenship.support@homeoffice.gov.uk in September and they replied that I should be contacted by the FCI (not sure what that stands for) in regards to my ceremony. FYI, I've found that it takes about a month for a reply to any emails I've sent. I'm hoping to hear something soon.

My UKF timeline from Canada ~~

Application Submitted - 15 Sept 2021
Received by UKVI - 27 Sept 2021
Invitation to Enrol Biometrics - 21 Oct 2021
Biometric Enrolment - 18 Nov 2021
Email stating my case is still in queue awaiting allocation to a case working team - 10 Jan 2022

Not the email I was hoping for in January! On one hand reading these forums have been useful for calming some nerves/uncertainties, but left with the impression this process is quite random so if I had to do it all over again wouldn’t compare my timeline as much to others. And don’t even bother looking at naturalisation timelines it’ll only make you mad!!!

Good luck to all and stay strong in limbo!

My application from the Philippines

Application Submitted - 25 August 2021
Documents received by HO - 8 Sept 2021
Invitation to Enrol Biometrics - 17 Sept 2021
Biometric Enrolment - 22 Sept 2021
Email stating my case is still in queue awaiting allocation to a case working team - 26 Nov 2021

1st follow up email (citizen.support@homeoffice.gov.uk) - 22 Jan 2022 - no reply

Complaint through gov.uk website - 5 March 2022 - pending reply (auto response said to wait 20 working days)

Emailed: furthernationalityenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk - 10 March 2022 - pending reply

Emailed: nationalityenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk - 10 March 2022 - pending reply

Paid email enquiry to ukvi - 10 March 2022 - they replied they have no access to citizenship applications and was given phone number to call

Called +443007906268 - 17 March 2022 - as directed by paid email enquiry but only received a recorded answer saying due to high demand they cannot give feedback and to wait for case officer to contact

Emailed: nationalitybiometricsoverseas@homeoffice.gov.uk - 17 March 2022 - received autoresponse to wait 14 working days

————- well, I got a little bit impatient past the 6 month mark. I know they could take longer but guessing a little nudge might help 🤷🏻‍♀️

Has anyone done some follow ups yet?

Funny reading this as I’ve spent the past two days taking all the same measures and to no avail either. The end of my 6 month service standard was a couple of days ago and the last I’ve heard from them was 10 January with their “still in queue” stock response. That customer service number they supply is total rubbish.. rather automated voice that leads you to a dead end or humans who don’t have any information to provide on specific enquiries. Tried asking one guy a general question to which he let out a huge sigh and said “you can try asking me a question”.. but ended up hanging up on me while I was talking!! Abhorrent.

Was hoping to facilitate my personal documents being sent back as my partner and I have a flight into the U.K. beginning of May but starting to think we’ll have to reschedule.

If it helps (million dollar question…) there’s a PDF of an enquiry form you fill out attached to the bottom of the Nationality Enquiries automated email which instructs you to send it to Further Nationality Enquiries.

Might have another go at it tomorrow so will keep you posted in the event of a breakthrough… please do the same!

I have done the enquiry form on March 10th, will get back on here if any of my attempts amount to anything.

It really does put a lot of things in our personal life on hold and the anxiety of checking email everyday to find nothing is getting to me. Only thing to do really is to wait.

For future applicants that come on here for answers like I have before, hope for the best but expect the worst timeline. Best of luck to us 🤞

Totally understand how you’re feeling re anxiety of checking the email too many damn times in a day!
Can’t even really put it into words it’s been heavy.

Reckon a productive next step would be to write our situations out to our local MP’s and hope they could have a go at enquiring on our behalf (as recommended on a number of solicitor websites discussing how to put pressure on the HO for apps past the service standard).

lemonblast, abe89,

Just wanted to express some solidarity -- I'm in the same situation. 8mo since the initial application and being without a passport, though I only finished biometrics in February.

Agreed, the hotline is terrible -- and misleading, since I learned that if you apply for Nationality you have to state that you applied from within the UK, even if you didn't. When I got through to someone, they said if the application goes longer that the 6mo. estimate usually they can escalate it, but they're behind on everything right now so aren't doing more escalations. I've also done the communication with the form you fill out, and got a response after 40 days just stating that my application was being processed as normal but everything's delayed because of COVID.

I've recalibrated my expectations to assume this is going to take a year and I'm applying for a new passport since the passport they have is expiring at the end of the month, so at least I'll be able to travel again.

I'm also checking this forum pretty much daily, so let's keep each other updated if any suggestions/progress.

Cheers.

Ok so, i received an email from UKVI complaint team and this is what is said:

“ Thank you for email correspondence of 5 March to the UK Visas and Immigration Complaints Team where you have raised a complaint about a delay in a decision being made on your application for naturalisation as a British citizen.

In some instances, the business area concerned has already taken steps to rectify the issue whilst a complaint is pending.

As such, whilst considering your complaint, I can confirm that action has already been taken to resolve the matter you have complained about. Our records show that your application was concluded on 16 March and that your ceremony was approved, and a decision letter was issued to you on 23 March.

I can also confirm that your passport was returned to you on 17 March, via International Tracking, Number:

In view of the above, your complaint has been closed.”

When it said ceremony was approved, does this mean I got the citizenship?

Sounds like it to me -- congratulations and thanks for the update! I'm admittedly a bit jealous but happy for ya.

So going by your timeline: Email saying you're a the queue approx. 2mo. after biometrics. Then approval letter mailed after another approx. 2mo.
