Many thanks for all who assisted, vinny and sushdmehta. The case was not a straight forward one, the advice offered on the forum was certainly important.

I'm filling out the passport application collected from the Post Office, is any one able to advise of the telephone number to book an appointment and am I able to book the appointment on the same day I submit the application?

Thanks! I only hope the decision was a positive one...

I called informing them one of my references had gone on holiday. The lady said it won't have an effect as decision was made on 15th. Good luck!

Contacting Home Office

Post by coolwater267 » Wed Feb 23, 2011 6:58 pm

Hi
I just wanted know to how did you contact the Home Office. I called them and after selecting few options I was told via recorded message that contact us after 6 months. Please can someone tell me the number and steps which they did to get through to coustomer services.

I applied on 27th Jan and just want to know the progress of my application.

Cheers

Called UKBA today on 0845 010 5200 option 2 then option 3.

They told me decision was made on 15/02/2011 and they have posted the letter on 22/02/2011. They would not tell me the outcome over the phone.

If you are planning on ringing then I would not just ask for an update as they will go on about the 6 months time period and not give you any info.

coolwater,
I called there saying that I will probably have to go on a business trip in April, and wanted to know how long in advance I should request my passport back. And he said 10 working days. And I said that I will call back in a few weeks in case a really need it, and then I said: "just so I have an update, do you know the current stages of my application? Has it been allocated to a caseworker yet?"
Then he said no, and that it's in the preliminary checks now.

There are plenty you can say.

- I have not recieved my acknowledgement letter and was wondering if i can get an update ;

- as someone else has said in an earlier post, you can say one of the refs is going on a long holiday and if that is ok, and by the way what is the status.

- I am looking at going to a family wedding abroad for a few weeks and just wanted to ensure i dont miss anything whilst i am away..

I guess you get the idea, and i am sure you can make up better ones.
Just make sure if you are gonna use any of the above that you reword and make it sound ok.

Coolwater,

I told them one of my Referees went on holiday, which they did, and asked they make a note on my application to contact the second person if needed. They then said that won't be necessary as the decision was already made.

It is probably worth mentioning that the process of applying in NI is slightly different from England, Wales and Scotland. Since HO has no access to the PSNI database (surprise!), it sends to the applicant a separate request to disclose the police records data (DAT1 form), which the applicant needs to fill, sign and send to PSNI. All this stuff is done with 2nd class mail and results in additional 10 quid to process the request and few weeks of time, time, time...

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking same thing that why it took his application so long to process.
