UKM and children

Post by Nv1 » Mon Oct 19, 2020 6:57 pm

Hi everyone

We originally came to UK on my husbands UK ancestry and kids 12 & 14 and I as dependants.
We all have ILR now ... so looking at costs UKM is cheaper then naturalisation...
Both my husband and I both qualify for UKM
If we apply for UKM what do we do about our children?
What do we apply for them and when ?
Thanks

If we apply for UKM what do we do about our children?
Once either parent is British, apply to register the children as British on form MN1. Costs £1022 each.
What do we apply for them and when ?
MN1 and apply after one parent is British already, or attended the ceremony.

Thank you for the reply ... would it be better if one parent does UKm and then spouse and children register after that ... or would it not make a difference for the kids ... just wanting to make sure they have the best option of registration/ naturalisation etc

One parent must be British and the other parent must hold ilr for the children to apply. That's all that is required.

Children are registered as British. Ukm is also a registration. Unlike form AN, form UKM doesn't permit family to apply with you.

Naturalisation applies to those applying on form AN with no UK born parent etc.

Sorry one last question
If we did the AN route would that be a better option for the children later on in life , I.e their children can get British citizenship if born outside UK?

For children, MN1 registration under section 3(1) makes them British otherwise than descent anyway, able to pass citizenship on to children born abroad.

Your route to citizenship is irrelevant.
