Yeah I got my Biometrics appointment request email on Feb 7, replied an hour later saying "any day or time, just schedule asap" and still waiting for the appointment. I'm going off of Mick's month long wait and hoping it comes in the next couple of weeks. Please keep us posted if/when you get a response.

So I would assume the "letter confirming your appointment" will come via email, but I don't know. Now I'm wondering whether I should be looking in my USPS mailbox, or checking my email inbox carefully (including my junk folder), likewise in both cases each day for a month or so hoping I don't miss it! Does the biometric appointment letter come via email or post mail? :? :?:
You get the letter as an attachment by email. Also, be prepared to wait for the appointment. I received my appointment about a month after giving my availability.

Hello, has anyone used a lawyer to check or assist in their application and to write their cover letter and answer any questions through the process? If so who did you use and what did it cost? I have my UKM form filled out and I believe all of my needed documents but I just want to stack my chances of doing it right the first time and hopefully find some affordable assistance since this is my first time doing this, thank you.
Hi Timgoes

If your application is straightforward ie Mum born in UK and has always remained a UK citizen then I'm not sure you really need a Lawyer. I'm sure they'll ask you for extra docs if you miss something out.
I just sent:
My passport
My mum's expired UK passport
My Birth cert
My Mum's birth cert
Mum and Dad's marriage cert
copy of my Right of Abode stamp that I had in an expired passort.
I got the nod this week and approved - 6 months after starting this process. Now will have a few months wait for the ceremony.

I just wrote a cover letter stating what I was sending and that my mum was born in UK and is a Brit.

Cheers

I agree with Jeda, the application is incredibly easy, I know when I looked into this about 10 years ago it was not so easy, there was not an online application and I did look at a lawyer and I think it was like $2000. It's only £80 to submit the application, if you mess up (which I don't see how you can), you are only out £80. I think a lawyer may only make the process take even longer tbh, they aren't going to have any special access to the people processing our applications.

But honestly all you need is your mums expired passport, her birth cert, maybe marriage license, your birth cert and passport. The hardest part for me was the referees, you need 1 (any nationality) with a job that the Home Office has determined to be worthy, and 1 who is a non-relative and UK citizen (but does not have to live in UK). I thought both had to live in UK which would be near impossible for me.

Hey BostonBrit, have you received your biometrics appointment yet? You got your email about your availability around the same time as me so I am just wondering if you've gotten any updates. I am considering sending a follow up email, but I worry about it resulting in a later appointment like what happened to Mick.

Update: last week (17-Feb) I received an email from MMST FCT Callnotes <mmstfctcallnotes@homeoffice.gov.uk> thanking me for applying for British citizenship and requesting my availability to schedule biometrics. I responded the same day (17-Feb) to UKNationalityAppointmentsUS@homeoffice.gov.uk with my selected nearby location in the US, name, DOB, and my availability as requested ("giving 10 days notice" it said, and I'm quite open I must say, as I am working from home). The email instructed not to make such appointment with the local Application Support Centre directly (as I was already aware from this forum). :)

Not BostonBrit, but I requested a biometrics appointment on Feb 15 and am still waiting for a response.

Another poster reported that they received their appointment about a month from requesting it, so I plan to wait until the end of next week before following up.

Hey cobra2, no biometric appointment yet for me unfortunately. Yes, I see we are likely in the same desk bin or inbox or wherever our piles of papers and documents reside these days - maybe even right next to each other! While I see that while our documents arrived in the home office on the same day (18-Nov-2020), you submitted your application online it appears a bit earlier than me (yours 4-Nov vs mine 15-Nov), and therefore it makes sense that you received your email inquiry requesting your availability to get a biometric appointment a bit sooner too than me too (yours 7-Feb vs mine 17-Feb). So a month+ has passed for you, and I should think you are checking my email about every day like me. However based on what I am seeing, I would agree with Mick it might be prudent to be patient for a bit more so as not to disturb the queue. I will surely post an update once I do hear. Although Mick reported "about a month" I think it could slip a bit more.

As well as simply checking my email, I am also searching my email each day for my Case ID number, just to be sure I don't miss it (and checking my spam folder as yahoo mail does not search there). The Case ID number appears to bring up all the UKM related correspondence since my application has been submitted.

And I see that cnhartford is here with us too in the bin. It's really nice to have this forum to stay in touch with each other since it's tough to get anything directly from the Crown! And because we are all caught up on "The Crown" on Netflix there seems nothing more to do now than wait. Cheers.

Yeah, thank you bostonbrit and cnhartford for responding, it is really nice to have this forum. I feel much more confident waiting knowing others are waiting just as long. I will certainly update the post the minute I get an email from them, and hopefully yours won't be too long to follow after that.

Wow I'm glad I found this board, I was going a bit crazy I think. Applied for Nationality UKM through my mother who is a British Citizen.

Applied: January 11, 2021
Application acknowledged: January 13, 2021

Biometric availability request email received: March 15, 2021
Email said "give 10 days notice"

Replied with eligibility to UKNationalityAppointmentsUS@homeoffice.gov.uk: March 15, 2021

No reply since as of March 31, 2021. It worried me because I have read that if you didn't respond in a timely manner to biometrics request, that your application would be cancelled.

So from prior posts, looks like I should be expecting a response sometime around mid April.

Ouch cobra! 8 weeks... I guess I should be expecting a reply more like mid may and beyond than the mid-April I was hoping for. That's not encouraging. It was hard enough to get my mom's old passport out of her hands, she has every one with all her stamps in it. She has every one for her entire life saved... so having it at the home office this long is a bit nerve wracking for her! I will suffer mom's wrath if her passport gets lost in this process. Thankfully I don't need my passport anytime soon, other folks timelines suggest I might now have my passport back until 2022. If that's truly the case, then I might be applying for a new US passport as I'm guessing my office is going to send me on the road sooner or later.

fyi, I tried using UK V&I web query, pay per use, customer service a couple times. I think they are disconnected from the UKM process. First I was directed to simply "Contact VFS Global customer service". That's all the email said. This is a service used in normal non-COVID times for visas and citizenship applications in partnership with the UK V&I department, with many US locations for biometrics and document scanning services so you don't have to submit your passport.

Problem is, there is no number to call, and no clear way to contact them. The only online contact for VFS global requires a reference number "GWF9" number I believe. I replied back to UK V&I and I advised the customer service folks that I don't have the "GWF9" number to apply for an appointment at VFS Global. They then sent me a link and directed me to VFS Global 'Overseas citizen' to "schedule my appointment as they don't require a GWF9 number''. I tried registering for the account per the instructions but then it requests a "UKN" number. So I'm dead on arrival anyway.

So I speculate that the UKM process is its entirely own division and processes and covid obviously isn't helping.

Hello cobra2, harmd, cnhartford, et al. Today I received an email from UKVI with my biometrics appointment, for next Monday! Here is my timeline:

Eligibility criteria: UKM

Nationality: United States

Applying from: United States

Method of application: Online

Payment method: Credit card

Date of application: 2020-11-15

Date documents sent: (UPS) 2020-11-16

Date money gone off account: 2020-11-16

Date of acknowledgement by UKVI (by email): 2020-11-16

Date of receipt by UKVI (as confirmed by UPS): 2020-11-18

Date of email requesting biometrics and date of my reply with availability: 2021-02-17

Date of email from UKVI with biometrics appointment: 2021-04-08

Biometrics scheduled: 2021-04-12

So as you can see from the day I replied to the initial request to schedule biometrics to the day I received a response from UKVI was 7 weeks, with the biometrics appointment date being 2 business days thereafter! Interestingly the emailed letter I received this morning was from yet another email address within their system, "nationalitycovidukvcasreminders@homeoffice.gov.uk", and they added new characters (GWF9) ahead of my application number, for whatever reason. I was searching for just my Case ID number in my email box, but that results in an incomplete search - so now I search for "homeoffice or ########" where ######## is my original Case ID number to find all the relevant correspondence. Maybe that's unique to yahoo mail, but it works for me. Ok, here we go! So I have a couple of days to decide whether to shave off the winter beard for my UK photo :P ....

As hard as it may be to be patient, I think waiting seems to work ok. Thank you all for the camaraderie!

For what it is worth, I don't think it matters, but I decided to shave just to have my new photo match the one I sent with the application.

This seems to be the key, as you point out, as hard as it is.

I had another 3 months after the biometrics before I was notified of approval. Now I am 8 weeks into waiting since approval for notice that the certificate has been despatched so they can schedule the ceremony.

All we can do is hope for continued good luck and that maybe the timelines will someday start to speed up.

Awesome BostonBrit, you've reinvigorated my enthusiasm!

I'm wondering also if the appointments have something to do with your location in the US, as some USCIS Application Support Centers may be a bit more overwhelmed than others with other business, COVID, etc.

If I hit your timeline, I'm expecting a reply to my biometrics somewhere around early May. If I hit the "about a month timeframe" others have seen, then its coming in a week or so. So anywhere between a week to 5 weeks, I'll take it. :)

I just got my email for biometrics appointment! Man, I was starting to stress and really think they lost my shit, so I feel very relieved now. So that took 62 days to get a response. My biometrics appointment is on Tuesday April 13th. I will submit a detailed timeline of my process later. And my email did not come from that new email address BostonBrit got, mine just came from UKVIEnrolmentInformationUSA.

But did anyone else get an additional letter? It basically is saying that some ASC locations have been refusing the biometric enrollment letter because there is a new letter for Visa applicants, but not for naturalisation, and to not turn us away because this old letter is indeed valid. Did anyone else receive this letter? Were there any issues at your biometric appointment?

Excellent news, cobra2, we are one day apart for biometrics!

So this additional letter is news to me. Is it possible you could share it, anonymizing any personal details? :?:

One more twist in the puzzle, hopefully not a problem, though.

When I had my appointment, the person up front checking people in didn't know the difference between visa and naturalization. The person actually doing the biometrics knew there was a difference, though. They have to log into a completely different system for naturalizations than they do for a visa when processing it.

Hopefully you won't have any issues.

Thanks for those details, MickByNameAndNature - knowing there is a difference might help things along, you never know who might be there on a particular day.

Sad news yesterday about Prince Philip. Surely he will be dearly missed by the Queen and royal family. :(

Here is the exact letter
Dear Sirs,
It has come to our attention that the ASC locations have been refusing the attached
biometric enrolment letters due to UK Visa applicants having a new biometric letter. As this
is correct for Visas applications It has been agreed that Naturalisation applicants enrolling
their biometric in the US can proceed with using the previous biometric letter as the barcode
will still obtain all the relevant information.

If you have any further questions regarding this can you, please contact me at,
nationalityexceptionstechnical@homeoffice.gov.uk

For further confirmation on the matter before turning any applicants away.
Thank you for your co-operation on this matter.
I wonder if they have had issues with my location turning people away which is why I got this additional letter. My ASC probably doesn't get a whole of of UK naturalisation applicants since it is not in a huge major city.

Hi All
I'm stuck! I've applied for my British passport (through my mother) - and have received my biometric enrolment letter from MMST FCT Callnotes <MMSTFCTCallnotes@homeoffice.gov.uk>
BUT the attachment seems to be corrupted, and I can't open it! I have emailed requesting they resend it, but still waiting. Could anyone share any light on what the letter would contain (ie. what are my next steps)? Perhaps I can just take the next steps! Alternately, anyone know who I should speak to to get it resent?
Thanks so much!

Oh gosh, Bramblesmum! How stressful! First, what makes you believe the files is corrupted? That is, what errors are you seeing? Assuming that you have not tried the easy methods, this is what I would do: Save the file to your hard drive and open it from there, not on your phone or other device. Confirm that there is a .pdf extension, and if not simply append the file name to add ".pdf". Next try opening with a browser, MS Word, etc. If none of these works, email back to the sender immediately! My appointment was only 2 business days / 4 calendar days out from receipt of the email. Best of luck, Bramblesmum!

I just completed my biometrics appointment this morning. I can share with you what's in the letter and how it went, however you will need a printout of that letter because they ask for it at the biometrics appointment (USCIS Application Support Center in my case) - the letter has a barcode that they scan. Here is the text content of the letter:
British Citizenship
Appointment Confirmation

Appointment Location:
USCIS Application Support Centre
USCIS BOSTON
7F Everett Street
02151

Appointment Date and Time:
Monday – 12th April – 10:00

Your Appointment:
When attending your appointment you must take with you a print out of your appointment confirmation and original copies of identity documents (unless otherwise agreed with UK Visas & Immigration).

Your application will not be accepted at any other appointment location. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. Please be aware if you arrive any earlier, you may not be admitted to the application centre until your allocated appointment time. If you arrive after your scheduled appointment time, you may be asked to re-book a future appointment.

I had shaved off my beard to match the photos I had mailed in with my application, per MickByNameAndNature's advice  I arrived at 9:30am and the queue had already begun forming outside the door due to Covid-19 limits inside the building. I joined the queue outside at 9:45 and was admitted by in around 10:10am. The staff was very efficient, nice, and helpful. They took my letter, quickly found my appointment made by UKVI in their logs and checked me in. I had to wait briefly, then was called to take my biometrics which included photograph, signature, and fingerprints of all fingers of both hands - all electronically recorded. They stamped by appointment confirmation letter and I asked what I should do with it, but said since everything is electronically recorded there was nothing for me to do. I was done and out the door by 10:30.

So looking at others' timelines, it appears another wait of unknown duration ensues - 2-5 months perhaps? I'm guessing that there is nothing for me to do but wait. At least I held onto my US passport :)

<<<<< Note that I had sent a full color copy (not original) of my current US passport, together with my most recently expired original US passport. My current US passport number was referenced in my application. I explained in my application cover letter that I could not be without my current US passport for the anticipated extended approval process due to likely work-required travel. I saw that sunburn and others had tried this strategy and it had worked for some, so I figured it was worth a shot. Anyway, it's interesting to note that the passport number UKVI included on my biometrics appointment confirmation was that of my expired passport. The USCIS Application Support Center noticed the passport number discrepancy and asked me about it, so I explained, confirming that my current, valid passport number was to be referenced. They were fine with that and apparently noted the correct number in the their system.>>>>>>

Congrats cnhartford. I got an email today just saying that my application would not be completed within the 6 month timeframe, which I kind of assumed since my 6 months is like in 3 weeks. I am just happy things seem to be moving finally. Going to my biometrics appointment a little later today.

Anyone who is far along on the UKM application trail....When did you finally receive your home country passport back after completing biometrics? I've been without my passport since 12/12/2019 (pre-COVID).

My timeline to date:

Date of application: 12/05/2019
Date funds withdrawn: 12/10/2019
Date of UKVI acknowledgement email: 12/11/2019
Date documents sent: 12/12/2019
Biometric first schedule for 10/02/2020 (long wait....due to COVID of course)
Finally completed Biometrics 04/02/2021 due to USCIS inability to accept my paperwork due to old style barcode.
