I'm not sure if you've tried this, but have you contacted the consulate where your ceremony will be held? Usually it's the closest consulate to you. I needed to switch consulates, as my preference was to complete my ceremony in my hometown, which I don't live anywhere near currently. I emailed them and explained the situation. They were more than happy to accommodate my request. I don't think it would hurt to shoot them an email at their general mailbox and see what happens. They may be able to track down your paperwork if they don't have it. I don't believe emailing will impact your situation negatively, as you've already been approved and well over 12 weeks have past since your approval. Worst case, they don't respond.

The general email is formatted like "UKinBoston@fco.gov.uk". Just change the city name to the city the consulate is in.
I do see that they have a contact form on the website for the consulate in Atlanta so I have just filled that in today to see if I can get any updates. They say they will respond in 1-3 days. If that doesn't work I might try the general email route.

Thanks,

Mick

Well, I heard back within a few hours but I think the reply was from someone in the UK working for the FDCO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) which is the department the Consulates are under. Not much help there.
Dear MickByNameAndNature
Thank you for your enquiry of 21/06/2021 23:21 .

At the beginning of the lockdown in many countries, citizenship ceremonies were put
on a temporary hold. This has been kept under review .

Usually you must attend a citizenship ceremony within 3 months of receiving your
invitation from the Home Office. Because of Coronavirus, this time has been
extended. You might be able to have an online ‘virtual’ ceremony, if your local
Embassy or Consular office offers it. You can attend alone or with members of
your household.

The Home Office have also said that no adverse decisions will be made on new
applications because of delays caused by COVID-19.

If there is a need for you to have your certificate urgently or you have any other
queries regarding your ceremony, please contact Citizenship Support in the Home
Office:

Citizenship.Support@homeoffice.gov.uk.

You do not need to contact the British High Commission/Consulate/Embassy to arrange
a ceremony. We are in touch with the Home Office and will contact you directly to
rearrange your ceremony.

We hope you find this reassuring.

Regards

I think I might give it a week or two to see if anything develops in that time and then try this route. At this point all they can do is tell me, again, to wait, or not respond. At least I got a response from the contact form, I didn't even get a response from the email to citizenship.support@homeoffice.gov.uk.

Keep hanging in there everyone!

Update on my status, I've been a bit tied up the last week or so but I unexpectedly without any notice or email received my documents (passports) and approval letter in the mail on 6/15/21.

Eligibility criteria: UKM
Nationality: United States
Applying from: United States
Method of application: Online

Date of application: 1/9/2021
Date of acknowledgement by UKVI (by email): 1/11/2021
Date of receipt by UKVI (confirmed by postal service): 1/25/2021
Date of email requesting biometrics and date of my reply with availability: 3/15/2021
Date of email from UKVI with biometrics appointment: 5/5/2021
Biometrics scheduled: 5/17/2021

Date of approval: 6/6/2021 (date on approval letter, received in snail mail 6/15/21)
Notification of Documents being returned: N/A (never notified, they just showed up)
Documents returned: 6/15/21 (received with approval letter)

Date notified of Embassy ceremony appointment: TBD
Date of Ceremony: TBD

On my approval letter, I was notified that it may take up to 8 weeks to be notified from my local Embassy, presumably SFO for me, for a citizenship ceremony. An email address was also provided if I don't hear within 8 weeks.

UPDATE:

Email to citizenship.support@homeoffice.gov.uk requesting status: 05/06/2021 - No response
Completion of Consulate "Contact Us" form and response: 21/06/2021
Invitation for Virtual Ceremony: 30/06/2021 - Received by POST (not email) dated 22/06/2021
Date of ceremony: TBA

See the rest of my timeline: in this post

Note: My invitation is for a virtual ceremony, this is in line with the response from my contact form inquiry of 21/06. Also, my invitation came via post, not email. Given the dates, my feeling is that they were waiting for in person to open up here but in response to my inquiry they offered me virtual.

I'm the first one I've seen here go through the virtual process, so here are the nuts and bolts of what was in the 3 page letter I received. I will post updates as they are available.

The letter includes a "What is required by you now" section which includes the following steps:
  1. Call the Consulate in Atlanta to make arrangements
  2. Email the consulate with the following:
    • Confirmation that you will virtually attend the ceremony on the given date and time
    • Confirmation that your personal device has a camera and microphone
    • Send a copy of your Home Office confirmation letter that shows your citizenship application has been approved.
    • Send a copy of your current foreign passport photo page or a local photo identification document, i.e. driver's license -- the copy must be clear, in an upright position without any background interference and in jpeg format.
    • Decide which wording you wish to say and state this in your confirmation email (oath/affirmation)
    • Your mailing address (PO Boxes not accepted) should match the address listed on your Home Office confirmation letter -- This will be used to send you your certificate. If you have moved since you received your confirmation letter your ceremony will take place but you will not receive your certificate until you have notified the Home office of your new address and this office has received confirmation of the same.
How the ceremony is conducted
It will be conducted by a consular officer. They also state that other members of my household may attend the virtual ceremony but must sit behind me and not interfere with the ceremony process, and also that it must be people who reside with me in my household.

Before the actual ceremony, I will have to show my identification and Home Office confirmation letter to the camera. I will then say the oath/affirmation. After the ceremony is completed there is a short time for Q&A so they advise to think carefully about the questions I would like to ask. After the ceremony, my certificate with be sent via UPS at no additional cost but must be signed for.

Yay! you got it finally!
Now, you just need the date. Those instructions sound more complicated than it is. I guess it's because you're doing this from home.
My ceremony was very informal - only 2 of us but we did it in person. No question afterwards and we didn't even sing the national anthem. It was almost, "wow.. was that it"?

I've applied for my British passport online and very easy to do - now waiting for that to be done - another 13 weeks or so I think. When you get to that stage, you just send your orignal Brit cert and your current passport and that's it. Then wait!

Cheers for now

Well, also remember that Aus and the Kiwis led the world in Covid Response. :D I expected mine to be in person but ecstatic that it is going forward either way!

I'll have to send off both my US and my Irish one then. Seems a shame to finally get the certificate and then have to send it off, but that's the price we pay....

In the US, the Postal Service takes a digital scan of the outside of every mail piece and if you sign up you can get an email every day of all the mail you are getting that day. So I knew at about 9 am that I had a letter from the Consulate but couldn't get it until 7 pm because my work is a 45 minute drive each way. It was agony all day.

But I'm finally able to say that it won't be long before we are officially fellow Brits.

Hi Mick

You may only have to send one of your passports off - they will tell you exactly what you need to send when you complete your application. Yes, it was bitter sweet re the certificate - had it for a few days and wanted to kiss it lol! The Passport office keep you up to date via email each step of the way.

I forgot to say, you do need to find someone to verify your ID (pref with UK passport and check which occupations quality them) Get your photo done digitally - no need to send a printed photo. Get someone lined up so you are ready to go ahead. A link to your photo is sent to them by the HMPO. Again, they let you know when that is verified and then tell you send your docs and where with a reference.

Glad to be here along with you on this monumental journey! We've certainly kept calm and carried on with it all.

Cheers

UPDATE:

I am now a Citizen of the United Kingdom!

Ceremony completed: 1:02 pm, EDT, July 6, 2021

Total time from application to ceremony: 347 days

The virtual ceremony was conducted via Microsoft Teams and lasted about 7 minutes in total. She read a statement about becoming a British citizen, I read my oath/affirmation, and that was really all there was to it. They did not record the meeting and said that wasn't something that was offered. They are now going to send my certificate to me so I should have that in a few days. I'll then have to send it straight back out with the passport application.

I'll still be checking in through the passport process. Best of luck to everyone still waiting!

Thanks. I'M BRITISH!! We both are British!! So long in the making and now finally come to pass.

Looking at getting my pictures taken this weekend for the passport. Did you use the app that gives you a code or just take digital photos and upload them?

HI Mick

Yes!!! We are both British. But you know what, we always were British. I sound English, spent years living there, I was brought up as a Brit. This is just a silly process we had to go thorough because our mother's were UK born and not our fathers. They need to change the rules around this. My husband is a Brit because his Dad was born there. He applied for a passport the sametime I did and his passport is due to be delivered this week!

Now, the photo. You can take it yourself. I did. I used to be a professional photographer so took it with my proper camera on a tripod and used the shutter release cord I have. You can take it with your phone or get a friend to do it. Just follow the image samples they provide on the passport site. They even have a video on what to do. You need to make sure the light is good as if you photo is too dark, the website will reject it. During your application, you upload the photo. It gives you an analysis of whether photo is acceptable or not. If not, go back and try again. Even I had to try a couple of times. They like well lit shots with no shadows.

Good luck with the next step
cheers

Hi,
Just wanted to post my experience on this and provide my timeline in this COVID world. Here are a few problems I had:

1. Getting referees. This is the most difficult part, but think long and hard on this one, and you'll find the right people.
2. Not having the correct birth certificate. You need a birth certificate with your parents name on it. Get one, in Ontario, 80s kids weren't issued these types of certificates, you need to request one.
3. Convincing my mother to give me her birth certificate and her marriage certificate. I sent originals.
4. Giving up your passport. I sent originals.

Looking back at my timeline, I was quite lucky based on what i've read previously.

Timeline:

Has anyone that is in my same time line as me, received an invite from the embassy? My 3 months since approval is coming up in a couple of days, I think cnhartford and BostonBrit are also about the same frame. Just wondering if we are all going to have to email.

Nothing on my end yet. Based on the time estimate I was given re: diplomatic mail, I figure I should hear back no later than September 10. Planning to follow up then if I haven't received anything.

To all that are coming up on their date, I don't think the US has been given the go-ahead for in-person ceremonies yet. My advice would be :
  1. locate the website for the consulate you would be getting your ceremony at on this website: https://www.gov.uk/world/embassies
  2. Click the link for your consulate and scroll down to the "What is your enquiry about?" text box
  3. Type "Citizenship Ceremony" in the text box
  4. That should give you a list of suggested answers, click "No, I would like to submit my enquiry" and a form should show up
  5. Fill out the form and under "Details of your enquiry" paste the following (filling in the relevant details):
My name is xxx and my UKM citizenship application was approved on xxx. I understand hat Covid has severely restricted operations worldwide, but I was wondering if I could possibly get an estimated timeframe of when a citizenship ceremony might take place, or if it could be conducted virtually?
You should get a fairly quick generic response. I did this and received my ceremony invitation by USPS about 10 days later -- no promises, it's just what I did.

I received my passport yesterday and will be posting my final timeline from start to finish as soon as I receive my original documents back. Should be late this week or early next.

It looks like the process is running much quicker now, except for the ceremony, so if you are willing to do virtual, it might speed it up even more. I can't stress enough to stick to the normal timelines, though, but if it goes past a couple of months since approval, you can always submit the form for an update.
