I am eagerly awaiting my UK citizenship via the UKM process, I am a few months in and am hoping for any reassurance that I will receive my original documents back (my Canadian passport) before a vacation (to the UK!) in July '23. In retrospect, I was very silly  to begin this process knowing I'd be travelling just over 6 months after applying, but I was feeling optimistic at the time.

Thanks to all previous for posting their experiences and timelines as it has helped somewhat in alleviating my anxiety, and I look forward to seeing new posts from others as they move along the process.

Eligibility criteria: UKM
Nationality: Canada
Applying from: Canada
Method of application: Online
Date of application: 5 January 2023
Payment method: Credit card, payment debited immediately
Date supporting documents sent (Canada Post Registered Mail): 5 January 2023
Date supporting documents received by UKVI Liverpool: 13 January 2023
Date of email requesting biometrics: 28 Jan 2023
Date of email setting biometrics date: 28 Jan 2023
Date biometrics done (Vancouver VFS Global): 2 Feb 2023
Date documents returned with approval letter: <pending>
Date of citizenship ceremony: <pending>
Date received citizenship certificate: <pending>

I would have loved to have received any type of confirmation that my biometrics were received by the UK Home Office, or have been given a receipt/confirmation during my biometrics appointment. I've just followed up with VFS Global to see if I can get such a thing now.

Warmest regards,

HI and good luck with your application. I am responding but will probably not be much help to you.
Applied from USA and I sent in a color copy of my passport, birth certificate and mothers birth certificate. The one original document that I sent was my mothers death certificate. Never received anything back....never even received an approval letter via the post. Others seemed to have received their documents back and an approval letter, so always wondered if it was due to poor service via USPS.

Hi! I super appreciate your response, I've been watching your posts about your experience and wondering if you ever received anything. It is good to know, but sad to hear, that after 8 months you haven't received anything back. I'll definitely begin my contingency planning asap. Bests and congrats on your citizenship!

UKVI sent me an appointment letter for Biometric appointment within 10 days of my application. The appointment was at USCIS Application Support Center in Sacramento, CA. The appointment letter listed my Irish passport number. I submitted my Irish passport with my application, but I have my American passport. When I presented my American passport, USCIS refused to do Biometrics until I presented my Irish passport. I gave them the email with the note that you can use any government issued identification, state driver’s license or passport. But they did not accept a US passport as identification for Biometrics. Have you ever heard of such a mistake? Their own manual states that’s passport or drivers license is acceptable, but they would not follow it. I have requested another appointment from UKVI and I am waiting. US Immigration flagged by appointment and cancelled it so I cannot have Biometrics done. I am thinking about contacting my congressman. Really frustrated. ANy assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you had a Biometric appointment? I sent all my docs via USPS Priority Mail and was able to track and it was received in 5 days. You may have to send originals. My application follow-up letter indicated that originals and original passport was required. Good luck, we will see how mine goes.

HI all,

Completed my UKM application successfully (details in previous posts). Now posting my application experience for a British Passport.

After receiving my certificate, I waited to apply for my passport since I was moving in the Spring, so wanted to wait till I had the new address. Overall my experience with the passport application has been 5 stars!

Unlike the UKM application, the passport application is tracked online and you also have the option to sign up for text and/or email notifications on updates. 1st step is to submit the application, then you need to get someone to verify your picture (I downloaded a digital picture). Once the verification is done then you receive notice on what documents you need to send. For me, I had to send a combination of original and color copies (not notarized).

Passport printed 1 June 2023
Application approved 31 May 2023
Documents received 23 May 2023
Application received 15 May 2023
Identity details received 15 May 2023
Email sent to person confirming your identity 13 May 2023
Ask someone to confirm your identity- 3 May 2023
Application submitted 13 May 2023

I can apply for UKM via my mother who was born in Northern Ireland. My wife is also in the UK on a work visa while I live in Canada.

It would seem easier to me to apply “from the UK” while I’m visiting her? Using her address and phone number etc. I’m able to visit her with good flexibility to meet biometrics appointment and citizenship ceremony etc.

Is there any reason I should not apply for the UKM from within the Uk as a visitor?

I am a UKM case, Spanish born but raised, educated, lived, worked constantly in the UK etc since being an infant, went to live in Spain
circa 2013/14 and with to return to live in the UK permanently and set up a business there (I have had limited companies before in the UK when I
lived there) so there is a long work / life history (good credit rating there, clean record etc) So there 'should' be
no issues in obtaining British Citizenship, however, I am just questioning the time to completion of the 'next stage' in the process.

You can see below that my Biometrics appointment in Madrid, Spain was completed on 05 APR 2023 and it is now 08 JUN 2023 (I am fully aware that the entire application
process can take up to 6 months) but since after my Biometrics appointment I have not received anything, the only ting I have is a print out from the
Madrid, Spain Biometrics office stating that I was there and the biometric data was submitted on 05 APR 2023 by a named officer there.

I have looked at other applicant's time lines for the application process and get their invitation for British citizenshipis roughly 2.5 months after their biometric appoinment and for me
it is rapidly approaching that 'deadline'. I notice that most British Citizen applicants are from English speaking countries e.g. NZ, AUS, Canada, U.S. and S.Africa whereas I am
Spainish only and located in Spain so I don't know if the English to Spanish language barrier will caused a delay in UKVI processing the application, although it's not as if I am in a remote part of the world, I am
in Madrid and the UK Biometrics office here is just 55 minutes walk away.

----------------------------
My questions to you are:

1) How long should I leave it until I email Liverpool UKVI asking about the status of the British Citizenship (my Biometrics was completed 05 APR 2023, it is today 8 JUN 2023) ?

2) What is the best way to contact Liverpool UKVI to ask about the progress of my Britisih Citizenship application ? (I noticed a forum poster here back in Feb 2023 mentioned something about a
"furthernationalenquiry" email address but I cannot find that full e-mail address. I've tried getting hold of UKVI before via the telephone services before just to see if
they received my documents and it is impossible, you just get sent around a merry-go-round of different departments that say 'I don't know' and put you through to others who tell you a similar thing.

3) Do you know when your referees were contacted ? I've checked recently and mine have had no communications with UKVI or any other UK government body, one is a British retired corporate nurse and the other
a British active commercial pilot.
--------------------------------------

As of 08 JUN 2023, this is the current state of progress for my UKM application:

Eligibility criteria: UKM
Nationality: Spanish
Applying from: Spain
Method of application: Online
Date of application: 17 MAR 2023
Payment method: UK Credit card
Date of acknowledgement of application: 17 MAR 2023
Payment acknowledged: 17 MAR 2023
Date supporting documents (all copies) sent to Liverpool UKVI (Corrreos Spain via UK Royal Mail tracked and signed for): 17 MAR 2023
Date of documents (all copies) getting stuck at UK Warrington Royal Mail depot, left unsigned: 24 MAR 2023
Date of RESENDING all supporting documents (all copies) sent to Liverpool UKVI (via DHL): 27 MAR 2023
Date of RESENT supporting documents received by UKVI Liverpool (via DHL): 28 MAR 2023
Date of email received confirming biometric appointment: 30 MAR 2023
Biometrics appointment date: 5 APR 2023
Biometrics done (Madrid, Spain): 5 APR 2023 (also received submission officer's name etc confirming Biometrics complete)
Date of approval: <pending>
Date of approval letter received: <pending>
Date of citizenship ceremony invitation: <pending>
Date of citizenship ceremony letter received: <pending>
Date of citizenship ceremony established: <pending ???>
Date of citizenship ceremony (MS Teams or maybe attending ceremony venue ?): <pending>

Date passport photo verified: <pending>
Date mailed passport documents: <pending>
Date passport documents received: <pending>

They're a third party and have nothing to do with the processing - they just take the data and pass it over to UKVI.

I don't think you can speak to UKVI by phone - they're outsourced their phone support to a third party. Same with biometric office, they're not UKVI employees.

Many thanks for the quick reply. Also any idea on how long after the biometric tests I should leave it before contacting 'FurtherNationalityEnquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk' asking about the progress towards the 'British Citizenship' invitation ? I don't want to seem too pushy as it has only been a little over 2 calendar months since I initiated this UKM process. And does anyone have any idea when my two UK British referees are to be contacted both of them haven't had any messages or calls from UKVI or any other UK government body.

again many thanks for the help and advice.

Hi, I just finished an 8-month odyssey from application to passport, and because this forum is the most helpful thing on the whole internet I'll add my data point.

My application was straightforward UKM, my mother was a citizen by birth. I'm in the US and I was grateful for the advice here that all out-of-UK applications must be submitted by mail, because the website is obfuscated and the expensive help line straight up lied about it.
I used color copies for almost all documents, because Mom is 85 and her papers are historical artifacts. I copied every page of my US passport and had them notarized as a single document. (I had to shop notaries to find one that didn't insist on stamping and charging for each page separately.) I took my own passport photo with a phone, VERY CAREFULLY with a lot of attention to the instructions. I included a cover letter saying I need my passport for business travel, and also I am not indigent and God save the Queen. My referees were an Oxford don and a friend in the US, he's a programmer but what the heck that's an "engineer" right?

Eligibility criteria: UKM
Nationality: United States
Applying from: United States
Method of application: Online
Date of application: 25 July 2022
Payment method: Credit card, payment debited immediately
Date supporting documents sent (Fedex): 8 Aug 2022
Date of email requesting biometrics: 13 Aug 2022
Date of email setting biometrics date: 24 Aug 2022
Date biometrics done (Boston area): 19 Sep 2022
Date documents returned with approval letter: 13 Oct 2022
Date of citizenship ceremony (MS Teams): 8 Feb 2023
Date received citizenship certificate: 21 Feb 2023
Date began application for passport: 22 Feb 2023
Date mailed passport documents (USPS): 1 Mar 2023
Date passport documents received: 8 Mar 2023
Date passport approved (email): 16 Mar 2023
Date passport received: 22 Mar 2023

I had no notification of approval before the document packet in October, which said to wait up to 12 weeks for an email about the ceremony. At the end of January I hadn't heard anything, so I sent an email and the office was responsive. The passport process was much easier and better supported, and also very quick (for which I'm grateful since I guess the passport office is now about to go on strike?).

Further notes: the virtual ceremony was pretty great! We had a hilarious fake background but the host was otherwise completely deadpan, the patter is really well written, there was plenty of time available for questions. Also they are still using the old passport stock printed last year, so I hope Chuck is OK with she/her pronouns.

Thanks for your help here, and if you're waiting, good luck in your quest!
For the passport application who were you able to get as a person knowing your identity? What was their nationality?

I am
in Madrid and the UK Biometrics office here is just 55 minutes walk away.
They're a third party and have nothing to do with the processing - they just take the data and pass it over to UKVI.

HI, for my experience. My referees were not contacted. I emailed furtrhernationality... about ~7 weeks after my biometric because I received a survey about my experience and was confused by what that meant. In my experience, the timeline is quick up front but then after biometrics are done that is when I just had to wait. It was about 4 months from my biometrics to receiving a citizen ceremony invitation. Best of luck!

Any updates on status? I filed a month after you and still waiting. 20 Apr 23 application, 24 May 23 Biometrics complete. I am waiting for documents to be returned. It’s only been 3 months, but I was hoping I would hear something.

Triathlete, I haven’t heard anything yet. I sent some additional information on 27 June, but received only automated responses from the two email addresses I used. The further nationality email auto reply says they don’t manage queries regarding applications from abroad and will not respond.

I’ve got fingers crossed that I might hear something at 7-8 weeks after biometrics as mentioned by les1419rby. For me, that would be 20 July onwards, so not too long from now. Or possibly to receive my documents back with an approval letter. I assume they will use DHL.

It will be interesting to see which of us gets approved first, as your biometrics date is a week before mine.

I will be sure to post an update here when I have it!

Pallykin;
Good luck, the waiting is the most difficult part. I thought it was more the application date than the Biometrics, as Biometric processing times should not be more than 30 days for anyone, in fact Biometrics in the US can be done in a couple of days (the criminal review part). So I am hoping for your fast resolution (and mine). I would think one of us should hear pretty soon, but I also understand that UKVI has a lot going on with Summer travel and visa applications and the recent onslaught of post-Brexit citizenship applications. Perhaps we can compare notes. I am really anticipating this and hoping I am eligible.
