People like me who have applied from abroad had to send their application documents via courier to Liverpool. It is my understanding that they use DHL to return these documents. I'm hoping that I will receive an alert from my DHL account when they send my documents back. People have been caught out when their documents were returned without warning. In some cases, people learned the outcome of their application when they read the letter included with their documents.

The approval is supposed to come via email from home.office.atlas@notifications.service.gov.uk. You might want to add this email address to your contacts list to ensure the email doesn't end up in your spam folder. Sometimes the home office fails to send this email. It is sent a few days after your application is approved.

Some councils/consulates require that you bring the home office atlas email to your citizenship, so if you didn't receive it, you will need to chase it by emailing FurtherNationalityEnquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk

Sometimes people learn that their application has been approved when further nationality replies to an email providing additional information. This seems to be a matter of good timing and a kind caseworker.

The citizenship certificate is presented to you at your citizenship ceremony. It is sent by the home office either to your council if you are in the UK, or the consulate nearest you if your are abroad.

Once you have had your ceremony, make a scan or take a photo of your certificate, and then send it off with a colour photocopy of your passport (all pages) as the supporting documents for your first adult passport application. The passport process is much faster and more transparent than visa or citizenship applications.

The UK government has published statistics: 200,362 applications for citizenship were submitted in the year ending March 2023, an 11% increase over the year ending 2022.
@Pallykin That is a great summary of what is typically to be expected from the UK Home Office at the latter stages of the UKM / UK passport process.

Just one final question, when you registered with DHL, which coutnry DHL website did you register with ? was it the UK DHL website or the DHL website in the country in which you were located (e.g. France, Germany, U.S. etc ?) I'm only asking because I've had dealings before with DHL in mainland Europe and the Spanish DHL website and tracking process operated on a slightly different DHL website to say the German DHL website (which is where I was sent DHL packets from to Spain). Presumably you registered with them using the e-mail address, phone number (and of course) your home address that you originally provided the UK Home office with upon your initial application. And how did you get a notification from DHL that the papers were arriving ? was it e-mail, phone text message etc ?

I registered on the U.S. DHL website and used the same name, email address, and phone number as on my application. Though thinking about it, I did not use my middle name.

I haven’t heard anything from anywhere yet, but it had to be soon as they are now processing applications with June biometrics. I’m 10 days away from the 6 month mark since application with biometrics 1 June.

Hello all, here’s an update from my earlier post including a timeline for both citizenship and passport application processes.

Earlier this month I received my British passport! :D That process took 59 days from application to receipt – approximately 2 months.

Prior to that, for the citizenship portion the duration was 186 days (just over 6 months) from application to approval, then another 141 days until I received my certificate of citizenship (total 327 days - nearly 11 months) including ceremony:

Eligibility criteria: UKM

Nationality: United States

Applying from: United States

Method of application: Online

Payment method: Credit card

Date of application: 2020-11-15

Date documents sent: (UPS) 2020-11-16

Date money gone off account: 2020-11-16

Date of acknowledgement by UKVI (by email): 2020-11-16

Date of receipt by UKVI (as confirmed by UPS): 2020-11-18

Date of email requesting biometrics and date of my reply with availability: 2021-02-17

Date of email from UKVI with biometrics appointment: 2021-04-08

Biometrics appointment completed: 2021-04-12

Date of citizenship approval: 2021-05-20

Documents returned and received (via DHL): 2021-06-01

Date of oath invitation: 2021-10-04

Date of ceremony (virtual via MS Teams): 2021-10-06

Citizenship certificate received (via UPS from British Consulate Boston): 2021-10-08

 Note the long delay of around 4 months from “approval” to the ceremony date! I had discovered that the email invitation was sent only a week prior to the scheduled ceremony but they got my email address wrong! Luckily I contacted them in time and they resent the invitation to me! I suppose anything that can go wrong….

The MS Teams ceremony itself was rather short – perhaps 10 minutes. The woman who conducted it in Boston was quite pleasant and was in fact interested to hear a little bit about my mum growing up in Birmingham and serving in the National Fire Service during the Battle of Britain.

 Note that I DID NOT send my original current and unexpired US passport, but made colour copies of every page (including the blank ones) and sent that instead. I did send my original expired US passport and my Mum's expired UK passport. All other reference documents were colour copies, which I had read could work, and thankfully it did! I didn't want to be without my US passport for 6-7 months!

Next, here is the timeline for the passport application process (which I had not rushed to begin):

Date applied for passport: 2022-05-03

Email sent to person confirming identity: 2022-05-03

Identity details received: 2022-05-03

Date of UK passport application documents submission sent on via UPS: 2022-05-03

Documents received (Durham): 2022-05-31

Email sent to person confirming identity: 2022-06-23

Identity details received: 2022-06-23

Application approved: 2022-06-24

Passport printed: 2022-06-27

Passport sent: 2022-06-29

Passport received (via DHL): 2022-07-08 (held since 2022-07-01 at local distribution per my request due to my vacation)

Documents received (via DHL): 2022-07-12

Well, there we are! And thankfully I have my new passport in time for a trip across the pond to visit family in England this summer! Not that it was needed, but nice to have.

Cheers to all, and of course, Keep Calm and Carry On - patiently always - as we are British! :D
So congratulations to me, today I received the letter of confirmation for British Citizenship, it was rather unexpected and 'out of the blue' and I have not received ANY official Home Office e-mail since my biometrics at the start of April 2023, my initial British Citizenship UKM application was around mid March. The approval letter was sent UK Royal Mail Tracked and signed for and handled by Correos in Spain. So that's just a tad over 6 months from initial application to getting the citizen approval letter and my case is a British born (my biological) mother who has always been British and lives in Britain and has done for most of her life etc.

I've been browsing the forums and I can see that the time lapse between receiving the British Citizenship approval letter and the actual ceremony itself is typically around 1.5 months to 4 months (4 months - if there maybe a problem as with the person's case above that I've quoted above) ... BUT .. my question is more related to the procedure for obtaining the passport which is not entirely clear, if you read the other applicant's passport application above he/she ? writes:

quote:

"Date applied for passport: 2022-05-03

Email sent to person confirming identity: 2022-05-03

Identity details received: 2022-05-03

Date of UK passport application documents submission sent on via UPS: 2022-05-03

Documents received (Durham): 2022-05-31

Email sent to person confirming identity: 2022-06-23".

What's involved in the step for confirming the applicants identity ? is it a universal procedure or does it differ from country to country for obtaining a UK Passport ? will I have to go to the Madrid, Spain UK / Visas center to get my identity verified again (like I did in the biometrics) in order to obtain a passport or will I have to do it at the UK Madrid embassy instead ? Or after I obtain the British Citizenship certificate after the ceremony can I just apply like any other British Citizen to obtain the passport just as they would (e.g. go the the UK Madrid, Spain embassy and request one if say they're in Spain or if they're in the UK go to the local Post Office and fill in a passport application form ?).

I noticed on the TLS Contacts webpage for Madrid Spain (they're the 3rd party organization that dealt with my biometrics appointment in Madrid at the UK VI Center Madrid), that for my online account for my UKM British Citizenship there were several (uncompleted) stages for a passport application, so maybe they deal with it ?!? I will contact them and make a general enquiry also.

I'm just wondering, as I would like to prepare for the passport application as much as I can (get recent photos ready etc). Note to admin, I have looked through many pages to get this info and the user quoted above is the best I could find for the passport application procedure details but I would like more details please.

thanks in advance for any advice.

The online process will guide you. Only docs will be your certificate and foreign passport plus photograph, you will receive an address with your ref code and mail those to HMPO UK.
thanks in advance for any advice.

Applying from: USA
Method of application: Online (via UK agent)
Date of application: 27 April 2023
Date of email requesting biometrics: 11 May 2023
Date of email setting biometrics date: 17 May 2023
Date biometrics done (Los Angeles USCIS Application Support Centre): 26 May 2023

My mother was born in India in 1933 to a UK-born father. She moved to the States in 1962 where she married my US dad and raised me and my brothers, but she kept her British citizenship until the end of her life in 2021. This is a way for me to honor her memory.

I'm crying happy tears. To everyone still waiting to hear, hang in there.

BritAtHeart just wondering if you've received your citizenship ceremony invite yet? I'm just a couple of weeks behind you and in Vancouver as well so I feel like we'll be getting that around the same time.

Just updating my timeline as I've just received my approval letter and *huge sigh of relief* my passport. I've added details below about how long it took to make the special request for the early return of my passport, just in case anyone else finds themselves in similar circumstances.

Eligibility criteria: UKM
Nationality: Canada
Applying from: Canada
Method of application: Online
Date of application: 5 January 2023
Payment method: Credit card, payment debited immediately
Date supporting documents sent (Canada Post Registered Mail): 5 January 2023
Date supporting documents received by UKVI Liverpool: 13 January 2023
Date of email requesting biometrics: 28 Jan 2023
Date of email setting biometrics date: 28 Jan 2023
Date biometrics done (Vancouver VFS Global): 2 Feb 2023
*** Needed passport returned for travel***
Date formally requested passport back from further inquiries: June 8, 2023
Date passport return request acknowledged: June 12, 2023
Date return request escalated: June 23, 2023
Date of approval letter: June 30, 2023
Date of contact from UKVI courier services personnel: July 1, 2023
Date of UKVI courier pickup window: July 5, 2023 between 10:30 and 15:00
(overnight courier service at my own cost)
Date approval letter and documents received: July 10, 2023
Date of citizenship ceremony: <pending>
Date received citizenship certificate: <pending>

In the end, I believe I could have asked for my passport back very early on without it having any negative effect on my application (I mistakenly believed I could only request it after 6 months). The other thing I learned was that when couriering identity documents, there may be confusion around whether or not clearance documentation is needed, and every customer service agent may tell you something different until it gets caught up in a customs exception. After staying up two nights during UK business hours trying to get my package cleared, I filled out two customs documents: a commercial invoice (stating these were documents being returned to me with no commercial value, that had not or would not be sold) and a proforma invoice (stating the same). It's my understanding that this is normally an either or form situation, but with the conflicting info for me it was better to supply too much paperwork then too little. For the declared values, the customs broker insisted on a value being reported for each item - they accepted replacement cost for current docs, and a nominal value for expired passport (i.e. $5). They rejected the forms when I had listed $0 for the expired passport. These forms should have been completed in advance and sent with the shipping label to UKVI, but I had misinformation about these falling into the exception for "documents" but because they are not "communication" they are a whole different beast? I think every courier service is a little different, but this was my experience.

So yes, sigh of relief, I'm looking forward to my citizenship ceremony and upcoming travel to the UK!

Hadn't had the chance to post my timeline yet and to my surprise I've already received my confirmation, seems to be close to a record time!

Eligibility criteria: UKM

Applying from: UK
Method of application: Online with documents submitted online
Date of application: 02 August 2023
Payment method: Credit card. Payment acknowledged immediately by email: 02 August 2023

That was lightning fast. At first I thought that the English speaking Commonwealth countries (or ex Commonwealth) may get faster completion times for the process compared to the majority of European countries but looking at some of the Canadian timelines above that is not necessarily true. I'm doing it from Spain as a Spaniard and it took a tad over 6 months to get the approval letter not dissimilar to the Canadians and I have both a British Embassy and a UK Visas and Immigration Center (that does biometrics also) only 5 mins drive away from where I live in Spain. I was informed that the ceremony can be performed in foreign located British embassies if you live close by but I dunno whether that's true or not.

Finally applied for UKM after living here for the majority of the last 15 years, and 3 previous successful Right of Abode applications across lost, expired and now expiring Aussie passports. Similar application situation to TooManyApples but not as fast at just over 4 months end to end, still very happy with the process! Now hoping to get my passport before a holiday in early December, apparently the current average turnaround for applications from the UK is around 20 days.

Eligibility criteria: UKM
Nationality: Australian
Applying from: UK
Method of application: Online with documents submitted online
Date of application: 4 Jun 2023
Payment method: Credit card. Payment acknowledged immediately by email: 4 Jun 2023
Biometrics appointment date: 8 Jun 2023 at Mark Lane
Supporting Documents and Biometrics submitted to UKVI: 8 Jun 2023
Local authority invitation to ceremony: 15 Sep 2023
Home Office approval email: 18 Sep 2023
Ceremony date: 6 Oct 2023

I sent an email today to CT8caseworkenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk requesting instructions on how to change my address for my Form UKM citizenship application (born abroad to a British mother before 1983) submitted 23 March 2023 from the United States, biometrics 1 June 2023, and received this reply within the hour:

“Your documents and decision have been returned today to your current address.”

Really hoping I’m not one of the 2-3% that’s been rejected…

I replied asking what the decision is, but no response and it’s after work hours in Liverpool. So more waiting…

I see others received an email informing them that their biometrics was registered and that they were in a queue...I never got any confirmation of this...so was getting a bit worried.
Now the waiting for the citizenship ceremony begins!

xyz001 did you receive any emails about your approval or was your only communication for this by post? I’ve just been notified that my decision and documents have been despatched today. I assume via Royal Mail International Tracked, so 5-7 working days… I’ve been following so many citizenship approvals on FaceBook that I assumed I’d be receiving an email from Home Office Atlas…

Any updates on status? I filed a month after you and still waiting. 20 Apr 23 application, 24 May 23 Biometrics complete. I am waiting for documents to be returned. It’s only been 3 months, but I was hoping I would hear something.
I just received a response to my email to CT8caseworkenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk that my decision and documents were despatched today… I have no idea what the decision is… I’ve just now emailed FurtherNationalityEnquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk asking for an update on the outcome. So maybe I will know by tomorrow morning…

The result of my UKM application was that it was refused.

Here is the text of the letter:

You have not provided any evidence to confirm that your mother was a citizen of the United Kingdom and colonies (CUKC) at the time of your birth.
We are unable to confirm she was a CUKC as her father and grandfather were both born in British India.
She would not therefore have been able to pass that status on to you.

*****

However, I did provide a copy of my mother’s grandfather’s passport from June 1891 stating that he was a British subject. It was not, however, a notarised copy.

This passport predates the booklet style passport. It is a large sheet of paper identifying him and it is a request for safe passage in the continent and it’s signed by the Marquess of Salisbury and it has passport stamps on the back.

I’m planning on reapplying as it’s free. But I’m struggling to come up with evidence that will prove that my mother’s father and grandfather were British despite being born in India, in both cases to fathers in Crown service, that would be better than a British passport.

Congratulations on getting the approval! I have a question regarding the fact you were refused Biometrics as you didn't have a passport. Did you have another form of ID, like an ID card of your country that you tried to give them? My son had his biometrics two weeks ago and the lady who did them asked for a passport but I gave his french ID card as we sent off the passport to UK as supporting evidence for the application. She then checked with her colleague who said it's fine to accept the ID. But on the TLS website account, I have a message saying that some documents are missing or not compliant with the Misson's requirement. I have no idea if everything is in fact ok or not. I guess my question is, did they refuse to accept you at the appointment or did you have your biometrics taken on the 15/05 and it was refused afterwards? thanks

It was unusual. In the United States, Biometrics for US and UK (and some others) are completed by a contractor, not a government agent. The contractors are paid less and want to avoid taking Biometrics from the wrong person so they overlook their own rules so times. Mine was just a one-off. My appointment letter listed my Irish passport number, which I had sent to the UK. They would not accept my Real ID Driver’s License or my US passport! The letter even says they can accept those forms of identification and I checked their manual and it days they can also, but this person refused.
I emailed UK Biometrics and they sent me another letter limiting my US passport number and got Biometrics completed that way.
I would not worry in your case. I just had a pompous idiot trying to be a police officer handling my Biometrics.

Thanks for your encouragement. Ah I see, that's annoying but glad it worked out in the end. Yes, same here, the biometrics center we went to was also a contractor company and the lady was a bit huffy as to why we didn't have a passport and was surprised we'd sent it off to the UK. Makes you wonder if they have extra time on their hands and just look for causing a nuisance.

Does anyone have the address of the UK passport processing office where you send your physical documentation (e.g. foreign passport printed pages etc), I am due to have my ceremony real soon and just wish to know where the physical documents are to be sent after I complete and pay for online the initial British Passport application.

I just want to make sure beforehand that DHL over here can recognize their address in the UK where the UK passport application documents are to be sent and I am able to send the documents via DHL which is usually the best service.

PS: I know you upload the photos etc online but I'm assuming that they want additional documentation (physical copies of my foreign non-uK passport etc).

There are a number of processing locations and you won’t know which one until the system tells you. You can look up addresses of HMPO on their website but it’s no help really.

UKM update and timeline.
I’ll give the most important dates:
20 Apr 23 Online application UKM-Romein USA
22 Sep 23 Approval Letter
06 Dec 23 Citizenship Ceremony

In addition there was the mailing of documents to Liverpool. So long at that occurs wishing 30-90 days of application you are fine.
Biometrics exam was 24 May 2023 but again, that is mostly a formality. You will get an appointment and it will be processed.
All other items are interesting to note, but do not amount for much in the process. UKVI receives up to 20,000 citizenship application per month. It is amazing that they get all or most completed within 6 months.
Basically, it is a well-oiled machine and all you have to do is have patience, perservere and follow instructions. Submit application, pay for application, send documents as the letter you get when you complete the online application instructs you to, go to your Biometrics appointment and then await a response most likely less than 6 months after you push the submit button on the application. Then once you get your approval letter, you wait for an invitation to the citizenship ceremony.
All of the above processes will normally take place within 9 months of when you finalize your online application. In my situation it took about 5 months for approval and 7 1/2 months for ceremony from application date. There is time to comply with the other requirements, though the deadlines are not a condition of getting the application reviewed sooner or later. You are put in a queue, an officer is assigned to your application and you will get your response.
After that, apply for a passport online, and that process appears to be very quick.
Good luck.

You may receive a acknowledgment and then the decision email. Caseworkers won’t contact you unless they have a query or need further documents, normally there are no status updates. The target for processing is 6 months. It may be faster or slower than that.
