British Passport for Child born abroad

Post by ADM24 » Sun Apr 12, 2026 9:03 am

Dear friends,

Greetings.
I write regarding the queries I have for my child's ((1.5years old) born abroad, for making British Passport application. I have British Passport (via naturalization) and my wife is Non British (we married 2017).
I hope I can make British Passport application outside the UK, as I am British & child is qualified for British Passport.
I have below queries:
1) Is my understanding correct?
2) As I already have British Passport, does the application still need to be counter signed, at section 10 of application form by qualified people as listed?
3) If answer to 2) is yes, is it Ok if I can get signature by non British / Commonwealth citizen, as getting signatures by British citizen, ouutside UK might be little challenging.

Any experience / suggestions welcome please.
thanks

I have below queries:
1) Is my understanding correct? Yes - refer to https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports - note it can take a few months depending on where the child resides.
2) As I already have British Passport, does the application still need to be counter signed, at section 10 of application form by qualified people as listed? Yes - not familiar with the paper form - I would recommend the online application which will explain what exactly is required including documents required.
3) If answer to 2) is yes, is it Ok if I can get signature by non British / Commonwealth citizen, as getting signatures by British citizen, ouutside UK might be little challenging. I think referee needs a British passport ... but again the online process will explain what is required.

Regarding "Confirming identity checks", i.e. the referee, this HMPO Caseworker document may be helpful: https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... ity-checks

Any experience / suggestions welcome please.
thanks

Was the child born on or after the date of your naturalisation certificate?

Yes. Your British passport is, to an extent, irrelevant to the conversation. You may need to submit your naturalisation certificate and the child's birth certificate though.

You can have a non-British citizen be a referee. But be aware that that can add a further delay to the issuance of the visa.

Be aware that the issuance of a first British passport to a child born abroad can take between six months and a year. You may have to work that long requirement into the visa requirements for your spouse.

Also be aware that the children of that child (your grandchildren) born outside the UK will not automatically be British citizens. British citizenship extends automatically only one generation outside the UK.

Thanks a million secret Simon for your kind replies. Yes, I got British passport in 2017 & child born in 2024.
I understand all what you have replied, thanks. Currently my wife and I am not planning to return to UK in next one year so no issues. I'll look for a British Citizen for application counter signatory.
thanks again

Dear All,

I had made application for passport of my son from New Delhi India, on 7th May. Payment was deducted in 2 weeks time, however didn't hear anything since then. I querried on chat with HMPO & was told application is waiting for case worker.

These applications are known to take up to 6 months from the subcontinent, sometimes more, as you were already advised.

Thanks for the response. Appreciate it.
I made the application on 7th May 26, in India, payment deducted afterwards, got email from HMPO soon afterwards, however I have not been contacted either for interview or anything. I am not sure, if interview is must or happens only for some cases.
7th July will be 2 months.
regards

Interviews are not done for all applicants. If they need anything they will get in touch. For now, you only need to wait.
