Is BRP required in order to apply for UK citizenship?

Post by Nesba_Crenshaw » Thu Sep 05, 2019 12:43 pm

Hello, I'm new to this forum. I'm a US citizen, resident in the UK for 25 yrs with ILR for 24 yrs, married to a UK citizen. I do not have a BRP and wanted to check whether or not I need to get this before applying for UK naturalisation. The application seems to indicate that you can apply without one, and I'm assuming, if that's correct, that when you go to the centre to upload documents, you also get your 'biometric features' recorded.

In case this is relevant: my current valid US passport does not have my ILR stamp - that is in my previous, now expired, passport - I was told by an immigration official in 2013 that I could present the expired passport with stamp alongside my valid passport. This 'procedure' is now the source of some issues. (It used to be that upon re-entry to the UK one could present the new passport alongside the expired with ILR stamp and immigration would stamp your new passport with the ILR stamp.)

Thanks for your help.

You are absolutely correct in your understanding. It needs some evidence that you are free from immigration control for which you can submit the ILR stamp on your previous expired passport. Should be fine. BRP is quite a recent thing.

BRP is not required. The ILR sticker in your expired passport will be fine
