Can claiming benefit affect our citizenship application

Post by Saraint » Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:48 am

Hi,
Both my husband and I have Indefenite Leave to remain visas and are planning to apply for citizenship next year. I've been recently laid off and was planning to claim contribution unemplyment benefit (not the income one). Can this affect negatively our application for citizenship next year. None of us have ever claimed benefits before.
Thank you
Sara

I guess you mean - Contribution-based jobseekers allowance? If you have raked up sufficient NI contributions in the last 2 tax years (07/08 - 08/09) then I reckon it'll be fine.

I don't see how this will affect your nat. application.

Anyone that has ILR is perfectly entitled to claim any type of benefit that their circumstances dictate they are entitled to ..... without having any effect whatsoever upon a Citizenship application.
