Can i move to Germany? Please help [England]

Post by fadeaway » Mon Jul 06, 2009 12:42 pm

Hi everyone,

I am a recent computer science graduate from university.
I am 21 years old with no criminal convictions.

I am interested in moving to Germany as some friends live there, would this be do-able? I don't even know how to start going about it.

I have previously lived in England my whole life.

Thank you.

From England. Sorry, that was a really basic bit of information I forgot!

I don't currently have a job, I just finished with University. But I would be looking for an IT related job in Germany. I would be moving over there to find a job and to be with friends.

You can just go mate if u have a UK passport.

Bear in mind IT is on it's arse there too, and if you are looking for customer facing IT jobs, ie desktops/helpdesk u will need German language.

I'm looking also, having spent some time in Berlin we want to relocate there, i'm back-end server side stuff, mostly conducted in English but even then u will need some German.

If you have a British passport, which i am assuming you do, you will be able to do this with little or no ease, as you are free to move and work in another member state. You have to improve your German speaking proficiency, in order to give yourself a better prospect.
The good thing is you can transfer your unemployment benefit to Germany, for about six months whiles you are trying to get on your feet. After that you will be entitled to German unemployment Benefit rate.

There seem to be a better prospect for IT expert in Germany than in the UK obviously.

Good Luck.

Ooh! That's great news :)
Yeah my German writing and reading skills are enough to hold a conversation with friends, but not so much the speaking/listening (it's too fast!).

Thanks a lot guys.

You can move there tomorrow. You will need to register your address, once you have a place to stay, with the city hall. You will then need to ask for a Lohnsteur card (a tax card). There are still jobs to be had in IT in Germany, especially if you are flexible and have a good set of skills.

Alternatively you could also think of basing yourself self in the UK (set up a Limited Company), and provide consulting services to German companies. They are usually so afraid to hire people domestically (because of very restrictive and strict employment laws) that consultants are seen VERY favourably.
