Can WHM visa holders take contracting jobs?

Hi friends,

If I come to UK with WHM visa, can I take IT contract jobs?

I saw the following information regarding WHM visas:

Should now intend only to take employment incidental to a holiday, and not to engage in business, or to provide services as a professional sportsperson, and in any event not to work for more than 12 months during their stay;

You can take most types of work, including voluntary work, but you cannot set yourself up in or run a business, or work as a professional sportsperson.

Will this clause prevent one from taking contract IT jobs?

I'd imagine this is a very grey area, being a non-immigrant IT contractor myself.

Best option would be to take the umbrella company route, like parasolit (google it) who effectively take ur contract and employ you on it. You lose the flexibility and possible anti-ir35 tax breaks but gain less worry and the feeling u r an employee not a company director.

Remember that off ur rate u must take off 22% or so as ur NI contrib, this umbrella route doesn't remove that obligation, as a contractor u cannot escape both the employer and employee NI deductions....

I read in parasolIT.com that they charge only 20£ or so per week for this service. Is that all that I have to lose to work under an umbrella company?

And is this route fully legal?

Yes, plus the extra NI like I said and it is legal.

Read up on it, especially google for other umbrella companies, Parasol seem to have the least worst reputation! Also consider IR35 and it's ramifications.

What about working for consultants like hudson, computer futures, etc.? Is that a solution?
