Need advice on immigration to canada

I am a Canadian citizen that has lived in the USA for the past 8 years and married and have a child.. We are looking into moving to Canada.. Obviously, I wouldn't have a problem and nor would my child.. My question is has anyone had any experience sponsoring a spouse back into Canada? I live and work here in the United States, so can't sponsor the traditional way but I've read you can still sponsor spouse and dependent child if you show "intent" of staying permanently.. How does one do that?
