Canadian fiancee wants to visit me in the United States

Post by DeadPoolX » Sun Oct 08, 2006 2:17 am

Okay, maybe this is a dumb question, but this winter, my fiancee (who's a Canadian citizen) has planned a trip down here to visit me in the United States. She's going to pre-clear U.S. customs at Vancouver.

The question is...should she tell the CBP officer "I'm going to see my fiance" when she's asked "what is the nature of your trip?" or "who are you going to see?"

We want to be honest with the CBP officer, but we're also afraid that mentioning the word "fiance" will raise a red flag and they'll think she's trying to immigrate to the United States. She's NOT attempting to immigrate to the U.S. at this time, and when she does, we're going to do it the RIGHT way and apply for one of the visas necessary to get her down here. We're NOT about to sneak her across the border like some illegal alien. The problem is, how do we convince the CBP officer of that?

So, what should she say? Should she be honest and tell the CBP officer that she's coming down to see her fiance (and possibly risk being denied entry), or should she say something else? Should she say she's going to see a friend or just "taking a vacation" or whatever? I've tried looking up examples and advice on the Internet and I've come up empty. The only thing online even remotely related is about the K1 Fiancee Visa, and while that's a possibility for us down the road, we just want a visit for right now--not marriage.

In a related issue, I am also visiting her a week before she visits me. What do I say to Canadian customs? Do I tell them I'm visiting my fiancee, or do I tell them something else? It's pretty much the same question, just different country.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time. :)

She should answer "pleasure" (the other standard answer is "business"). If the immigration officer asks who she is going to visit, she should say "a friend". The fact that she is in a romantic relationship is none of the officer's business, unless you plan to get married during her trip and stay in the US together. Sorry, I don't know anything about Canadian immigration.

I am from Toronto, Canada... when I visited my US fiance (now husband) several times, I never said that I was going to visit my fiance. I simply told them I was visiting friends... I had heard that if you do say Fiance that you would have to prove that you have a job in Canada (paystub), a residence etc... that you are planning on returning to... I was always stressed about telling them anything, but I never said Fiance!

Good Luck

It is worth all of it and more. It took 3 years to get all the paperwork and stuff done, but I am a permanent resident now and don't regret any of it!
