Canadian non-resident returning to Cda

Post by rbm » Thu Jul 19, 2007 6:23 am

I am a Canadian citizen who has resided outside Cda for over 20 years. I am considering returning to Cda to live. Does anyone know if I must go thro' some form of repatriation interview or fill out a form, declare my non-Canadian, offshore assets, savings etc...? Any guidance would be helpful. Thanks.

No "repatriation interview". Just return on a Canadian passport.

But do bear in mind:

- did you obtain non-resident status from Revenue Canada before you left?; and
- you may face a 3 month waiting period for provincial healthcare; and
- what country are you currently living in and are you also a citizen of that country? (this may affect a number of things, including social security).

returning non-resident Cdn

Post by rbm » Sat Jul 28, 2007 8:42 am

Thanks JAJ. I left Cda in '87 and advised the revenue people that I had become a non-resident. They have referred to me as a non-resident in their correspondence but other than that there is no formal declaration to or acknowledgement by RC. I severed all connections with Cda. other than to maintain my expat work-related association membership and a bank account to pay for it. I am not concerned about the medical. I am a Permanent Resident (equivalent to citizenship) of Hong Kong. Any thoughts?
