Child benefit for step daughter

my situation is as follows, i am british citizen, mt wife is origibnally from Africa, but is on ILR and has BRP, has done for a number of years

my wifes has a daughter from a previoud releationship whilst in Africa, my stepdaugher is 12, we applied succsessfully for a visa and has a ILR she came to live with us in June of this year, we also have 2 other UK citizen children that we claim Child benefit for, i am not sure if we can apply for child benefit for our stepdaughter as well, I do remember the original Visa documenntation stating that we should not claim benefits for the child when she arrives in the UK, my understanding wasthat Child benefit is a universal benefit, does anyone know if we can claim Child benefit for my step daughter

You (as a BC) can claim child benefit in own right.
Do not put mother (with no recourse to public funds) on any CB claim application.
