EU citizen wanting to be british

Post by nasir123 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 12:25 am

Hi everyone...
I am from sweden and my spouse is from Pakistan. We have lived together for 4 years and have been married since february 2008. My spouse got 5 year residence card when we got married as we went through the EEA route.

I am now looking to apply for british citizen ship and would like to know if that would help him get british citizen ship any sooner rather than wait for 5 years RC and then 1 year after that to become a british citizen. I know that if we move to sweden he will need to be there for 3 years to become a swede..But we are living here and got good jobs.
Please advice. Or maybe if you know any good solicitor in London who you think will be able to help....Cheers..

Your acquisition of BC will not help your husband attain BC any quicker as the EU route and UK route are not interchangeable.

You husband would need to either remain on the EU route and apply for BC after 5 years of ordinary residence + 1 year of PR (if the BC rules do not change in 2011) OR once you become British he can start from scratch under the UK immigration route (spouse visa + probationary citizenship + PR + BC...) longer route + more hassle + ££££ spent!
