UK citizen with grown US citizen children

Post by TillyM » Fri Aug 28, 2015 3:46 pm

Hi all,
I am a UK citizen born and raised, but lived in America for 25 years, and have 3 children over 18 all born in the States. I never applied for citizenship for them as I never thought I would move back to the UK. But after my divorce, and now that my children have their own lives, I moved back to the UK and remarried. My kids would love to have the opportunity to live and work in the UK, but as far as I can tell it's not possible without a special visa.

Can anybody tell me if there's a way to bring my adult kids over without a student or work visa? Is there a way I can get them British citizenship?

If this means you were born in the UK and born British, then your children born in the US were born British by descent, although depending on when they were born they may have to register.

Have a read of this and see if this applies.
Born before 1983 to a British mother.

Sounds like you're British otherwise by descent, so your children are entitled to be British by descent, which means that they don't need a visa or a naturalization application. They can directly apply for a British passport. Their children, however, would not be British unless they are born in the UK.
