US citizen working in britain for 6 months

Post by nichole418 » Sun Jul 15, 2007 10:03 pm

My boyfriend lives in England and I am an American citizen. I would like to go spend six months over there with him, but I need to be able to work. I am confused on how this works? Do I need a work permit to hold a normal job (retail,secratary....) Any information would be helpful.... Thanks so much:)

If u need to work you will need a WP or HSMP, but to be honest these are for highly skilled/in-demand jobs etc.

Or u can marry and apply for spouse visa from usa and work then. Or get student visa and work 20hrs a week, but cost of course is well more than u can earn on 20 hr a week...

Otherwise forget it. Sorry but that's the way it is sometimes.

One more thing to consider, Nichole, if you are currently or have very recently been a full-time university student:

I did BUNAC in 2000 and, though I didn't make much money at the 2 part-time jobs I worked, I had a great time! Now I am preparing to return to the UK under HSMP. I was in grad school there 2001-2004 and can't wait to get back.
