Claiming Benefits while children are abroad

Post by Johnbecks » Wed May 05, 2021 11:18 am

Hello,

I've been claiming both UC and Child benefits for the past couple of months. Myself and my daughter are eligible as we are both British citizens. My wife on the other hand is on a spouse visa and has no recourse to public funds. She doesn't work for the time being thus no additional income is calculated with the benefits.

My question is whether I need to inform DWP that they are leaving on holiday?

I read that the claimant (Myself) can keep claiming Universal Credit if I'm going abroad for up to a month as long as I inform DWP. However, I'm won't be leaving with them.

Please advise?

Thanks.

You will need to tell UC that the children you are claiming benefits for (and I assume a work allowance on UC because you have children?) are going abroad for more than 1 month. From what I recall under the welfare reforms, Universal Credit does not pay for children outside of the UK, but the DWP will know.

The same with HMRC and Child Benefits if it is a holiday for more than 8 weeks.
