claiming short term sickness benefit...can i do this?

I am completely confused as to what I can and cannot claim as a British citizen married to an American lving here in the UK. He has been here 3 years and has worked full time throughout. His visa states that he has no recourse to public funds and we both assumed that included me as well. So questions below that I would appreciate clarification on if you can

1) Housing Benefit. I know my hubby isnt entitled to it, but can I claim my portion?

2) Im out of work with inner ear infection for at least the next month which means we will only be survvng on my hubby's pay, which is minimum wages. Can I claim sickness benefit in my own right?

3) As a full time working mum, can I claim child tax credit even though my hubby has a 'no recourse to public funds' stamp on his visa?


Thank you so much for any upcoming replies. We have been living on the breadline for 3 years now , just living on our low income weekly wages and it has been a huge struggle for all the family.

You need to go and visit your local employment office - they will advise you on what you can claim for, you are "short term" sick and your husband is at least earning a wage so its not as bad as it could be. If your company doesnt pay you sick pay you will be eligable for SSP (Statutory Sick Pay) which isnt much but will help, with regards to housing benefit, dont hold your breath and be prepared to fill out forms (Its like an exam paper! - make sure you get the answers right!) - its a mind field out there for the likes of you and I who are not accustomed to abusing the system.

Wish you and your family all the luck in the world, the process is degrading and you'll be treated like a criminal even though Im sure you've worked all your life.. I didnt bother in the end simply because I found a job within a week - first time unemployed in 24 years and was treated like rubbish!
