Divorce for foreigners

Post by guarrazo » Mon Feb 16, 2009 3:05 pm

Hi guys,
Hope you can help me. I got married one year ago in England, I'm from Chile, so to get married I needed to apply for a resident visa etc...My main concern is that we are getting divorce on march 2009 and my resident visa last until march 2010. Someone knows if after the divorce I just need to leave England straigh away?, or just when my resident permit expires?. I'm working, settled but I don't know what the law mention about that.

Hope you can help me
Thanks

When did you first move to the UK? I assume you are on a spouse visa, and your husband is British or a permanent resident...

Once divorced you would normally be required to leave the country, or switch to another visa category that you qualify for (e.g. student visa or Tier 1) as soon as possible (I think 28 days is the rule).
