Dual Citizenship

Post by deathstar75 » Mon Jun 27, 2005 7:01 pm

Hello,

I will be returning to UK shortly from Brazil. I will be coming with my Brasilian girl friend.
She tells me that she has a dual citizenship with Brazil, and Italy.
At the moment she is only coming to the uk for a visit. Then would look into getting work here.
What would be the best thing for her to do?
Mean is she classed as a european citizen, and if so what can she do?

If more information is needed please ask.

Regards and thanks for any info.
Mike

Mike, if your girlfriend has an Italian passport she can use that to enter the UK. When here in the UK she will have full freedom to either be a short-term tourist, or indeed to live and work in the UK. That is, she will be using what are commonly known as "treaty rights", under the treaty governing EU members.

If she has an Italian passport then the fact that she ordinarily lives in Brazil, and also has a Brazilian passport, is irrelevant.

John,
Thank you for the information and quick response.
Do you know of a website where i could get more information.

Or maybe you could answer this example.
She comes here for 5 months then after the 5 months are up she decides that she would like to work / live here. What would she need to do. Would she need to back to either Brazil, or Italy and apply to stay or work?

Again regards and thanks.

Mike, you are British? If so you have an absolute right to visit and to live and work in any other EU, indeed EEA country. If your girlfriend has an Italian passport then she has exactly the same rights!

Think of it this way ... landing at a UK airport .... passport control .... the channel you go through .... EEA/Swiss? .... and which will your girlfriend go through with her Italian passport ... the same of course.
