DVLA lsot my passport (with Tier 1 Visa) - Need Help

Hi All,

I am an Indian Citizen on a Tier-1 General Migrant Visa.

Recently I applied for my provisional license with DVLA and have sent my Indian passport as the ID document. It has been nearly 2 months since I applied and looks like DVLA have lost my passport. They have sent me a letter explaining the situation.

On enquiry they say I will be compensated for the minimal cost (not premium/express costs) incurred to get a new passport and visa.

I have travel plans to India made for next month end and I will not be able to get a new passport and visa with in that time with ordinary costs.

What are my rights here? How can I enforce DVLA to compensate the premium costs incurred?

Seeking advice on this issue...

What makes you think that you may be entitled to premium compensation? Did you check with DVLA under what circumstances (if any) are applicants eligible for premium compensation?

Sorry... this is the most general forum I found to post this issue

I have applied for a new passport which will take 4 weeks to process. (no premium costs there).

If apply for my transfer-of-conditions by post (which is the cheapest), UKBA doesnot give any timelines. the guidance says the time taken to process will be between 4 weeks to 14 weeks. (£169)

The same day premium service offered by UKBA guarantees the visa in 7 days. (£578)

By scheduled travel date is close to 6weeks from now.

If I go by the postal route, I will have to delay my travel and lose on the ticket costs...

This forum is for immigration matters, not a general forum. There used to be a section for non-immigration related queries which has since been closed.

This said, you can always postpone your trip home until such time that matters are sorted out. As I said, best to get legal advice on what your legal rights are in the matter and what compensation you may be eligible to.

Oops! UKBA doesn't guarantee anything like that ... in person applications do not guarantee same day approvals / issuance. Moreover, given that TOC application requires you to provide original visa in the old passport at the time of application which you obviously cannot do, it is quite likely that your application may not be decided upon on the same day (and visa issued in 7 days).

hi, Just go to nearest police station lodge a complaint showing the letter from dvla.. Then they will give a crime reference number. After that ,if u have xerox copy of your passport , then take that along with crime reference number from police and dvla letter, contact nearest indian high commission or consulate , then they will issue a new passport which is valid for 1 year...The whole process takes not more than 1 week..
To get full valid passport , u need to apply in india , then after doing some checks , they will send information to high commision in uk, once they receive the info, they will again endorse few more years of validty on the passport

Hi skomati,

I realize that the duplicate passport issued will be for a year. But should I travel to India to get it renewed after that? Can't that be done from the High Commission in UK?
