EEA Family Permit - other family members question?

Post by Ben » Sat Mar 01, 2008 11:46 am

When applying for an EEA Family Permit at www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk, it now asks how many other living family members the applicant has. You have to select a number between 1 and 10, then give personal details for each - including:

Their full name,
Their relationship to applicant,
Their date of birth,
Their marrital status,
Their country of residence,
Their full address.

I'm applying for an EEA Family Permit for a family member of mine, currently resident with me here in Ireland, to visit the UK.

Now, have I missed something here? When it asks how many living family members the applicant has, and then wants all the personal details for each of them, does it mean all living family members? Parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, cousins? There could be scores! Yet the maximum is only 10. Plus, personal details (as above) for each and every one? What if we don't know the date of birth of auntie Silvia in New Zealand?

We could make an assumption that "living family members" means those living under the same roof, but I wouldn't want to make an mule out of u & me.

Confused. :?

That is funny, because it is not a question you really have to answer, certainly not when moving within the EU.

But my guess is that "family member" means the definition used in Directive 2004/38. These would be close family members only (such as spouse or civil partner and children under 18), that automatically have the right to move with you.

In the end, unless a definition is given, you can pick any interpretation you like.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks it's a bizarre (and vague) question. :P
