Emigrating to Germany

Post by darrenp87 » Tue Aug 23, 2011 9:17 pm

Hello All,

My girlfriend and I are looking to emigrate to Germany (hopefully Bavaria/Munich area), and are pretty stumped as to how to even begin planning for such a thing. My girlfriend is half German and has a reasonable grasp of the language. She is also a fully qualified primary school teacher and is just about to begin her second full year of teaching.
I am just beginning to learn German but have no 'trade', as it were, to take into German society.

All I am really looking for is some sort of guidance as to what steps need to be taken to set the wheels in motion, and perhaps any advice or similar experiences that I could draw upon. Any ideas as to what expectations we should have with regards to work/housing/leisure etc would also be ideal.

I am new to this forum and we truly appreciate the help anyone is able to offer us!

This is usually a visa forum for people from outside the EU. If you and your girlfriend are both UK/EU/EEA citizens, you won't have any visa issues in moving to Germany. You just can move there!

For more information about setting up a home there, finding a job and making a life, there's a better forum for you to check out. It's for English-speaking people, so you'll find lots of other British people living in Munich. Check it out. The web address sounds weird, but it's a worthwhile site.

Good luck.

It is funny. I do not see many people use the word emigrate any more. I tend to think of it as go for a while and try and see how it works out, rather than the finality of emigrate.

In any case, as pointed out, if one or both of you are EU citizens, then it should be straight forward from an immigration perspective.

Munich is a great international city. Very nice place to live!
