Employability and SEGS

Post by Symplectic » Wed Jan 03, 2007 3:08 am

Hello everyone,

I am currently outside of the UK but am eligible for a SEGS visa since I recently finished an MSc in maths. I'm wondering if others could share their experiences of searching for jobs under SEGS. Is it difficult to get hired since one is only authorized to work for 1 year? Will employers basically require one to get a work permit eventually, or might it be possible to find temporary positions just to pick up experience?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Symplectic,
From my little experience, a lot of employers will employ you with SEGS but not all of them are willing to do a work permit for you when it expires. so its a gamble that you have to make. I am on SEGS my self and know a lot of people that are currently employed. If you avoid foreign firms, they are usually more reluctant. And also try to get a specialist role kind of Job that are usually more difficult to fill. You should be fine. However one of my mates whose SEGS expired had to go back to India because his employers (American firm) refused to do a work permit.
