By experience I know you are right. Its just that, reason fails me.

what, a person offering technical consultancy( spend his day bending over a laptop and smoke occsaional cigarettes), has to do with nationility and all. And why people brag about 'equal opportunities' if they provide employment judging by nationality and other attributes of a person(left unwritten) which is beyond his skillset and their immediate requirement.

Sorry if I sound bitter, but life is just not 'just'. No pun intended.

btw, guess on nationality was right.

There is no manufacturing base left in the UK. End of..

TBH, it is unlikely that you'd find a decent paid job in the manufacturing sector in the UK..Do you research before you board that flight

PS: Have you tried China?

Job Market seems bit slow

Post by nshar1 » Thu Mar 06, 2008 2:59 pm

I came to UK around 1 month back. I am on Java and JEE with solid experience. I have had hardly any interviews yet.
I think the job market is getting slower as is the economy.

Unless you are lucky it will take some time to find a job. Come prepared to search for upto 3 months.

I get 2-3 calls from agents everyday. Beware - Atleast half of them are fake ones( they are more interested in knowing which companies are hiring than in you :) ).

In a nutshell, the process takes time and the conversion of agent calls to interviews is very very low. I think any competent person will manage to find a job but it can take time.

Dear Friends,

I am a Senior Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) with around 6 years of experience.

a) I am an expert with All recent versions of Oracle Database i.e. Oracle 7, 8, 8i, 9i, 10g, 11g.

b) I am also an expert with Oracle's High Availability features like RAC, Data Guard, Streams, Replication etc. I am also very very good with tools like EM, RMAN, FLASHBACK etc etc

c) Why I say I am very confident of my skills is that I am a part time Oracle Instructor as well. SO besides my practical experience at the Largest Stock Exchange of my country I teach at Oracle University.

d) I have worked on most popular platforms that Oracle provides its software on e.g. Windows, Linux, IBM AIX, SUN Solaris, HP UX

e) I am also good with other Oracle Products like Oracle Application Server, Oracle Discoverer, Oracle Forms & Reports etc

f) I also a visiting faculty member at one of a re-knowned universities of my country and teach courses like RDBMS, Advanced Database Management etc.

Guys I make decent money at what I do in my country (Preety Decent). I also have my HSMP initial approval. So much so that in my country (Pakistan) I have so much opportunity that I can work 24 hours each day of the week and still people would be running around me asking for there advice. Do you think I stand a chance in the UK?

Regards

Honestly, if things are so good for you back in your country, maybe you should stay there..I am not being condescending, its just that the UK might prove a struggle initially, especially for someone from Pakistan. However, things would get better if you persist for a few months, but be prepared for a few frustrating months (and loss of earnings). The economy here has taken a turn for the worse and permanent jobs are harder to come by. It depends on your skills and luck and if you are confident enough, you should do your own research and take the plunge. You can always return home if things don`t work out for you in this part of the world...

thirdwave,

Your advice is what I am considering on doing as off now. Why I want to move to UK is a question that I often ask myself. The answer to it is general sense it to explore what a different (more advanced & Developed) country like UK has to offer.

Yes I can always give it a shot. If things dont work out I can always return home and what the hack I can always get another job.

Thanks for your honest words...

You have good experience

don't expect people here to be running around you  .

Also would be better to improve your English before you land here.People with High paid jobs usually are expected to be fluent in English.

I wish you guys well.

(By the way I havent left my home country yet - Neither do I have an EC, I shall be applying for it early April)

Congrats. It's a real booster for people who are on HSMP and trying to find a job in UK from their home country. Probably you can share your experience , other people in the forum can benefit a lot.

Hi Majic,
How did you get this job? Did they offer you decent UK salary?
I too senior oracle DBA having 12yrs of exp. and having HSMP visa.

I don't know much about UK market but whatever I heard from my friends who are working with top finacial firm in Uk as sr. DBA is conflicting. They are saying in UK normal perm job rate for senior DBA is in the range of 50-55K. If we see on job sites rate are very high i.e. 60-65K for perm role.

I know it is all depend skill sets and exp.

Thanks,
Ajay

Congratulations Majic! Without EC, that is some feat! I agree with SKUK, it will be helpful for others to know how you went about securing a job from your home country i.e. application, interviewing and negotiation. Did you fly in and out of UK?

Dear Friends,

Thanks to all of you for your greetings on my securing this job. Well, I had two interviews:

a) My initial interview was a decent hour long technical interview...actually it was a tele-con with multiple people presumeably from different locations where questioning.

b) To me most of the interview was straight forward.

c) I was straight with them that I have an initital approval but havent even filed for EC yet.

d) I told them of my peoblems and that i can join them in 2 Months

The next call I got was an acknowledgement that I had made it.

The salary and perks are excellent and I couldnt have asked for more.

My suggestion is to be honest and be confident.

Got an offer finally

Post by ThirdWorldTraveller » Mon Mar 31, 2008 1:40 pm

Dear Forum members,
Please find my dates below:

EC: 21-02-08
fly to uk for a day for two interviews: 29-02-08
One offered less than what i expect: 1st week of March
One offered 52k yesterday:
Waiting for one more( this one didn't need travelling to UK for interview)

Upto this point, I'll consider myself more or less successful in my job hunting, although it was difficult job hunting remotely. people back in India/pak or US, i'd suggest to come down and look for it. people in Europe can do this by my way.

Hi Majic,

Congrats!
Thats pretty impressive. I

I understand that If one has the right skills then jobs can be bagged sitting at home country.

So I am just curious to understand , how a 1hr telephonic got you an offer?
Absolutely no offence meant to you, but would be great if you can explain in detail.

Did you have to fax them your credentials and certificates?

Reg: Job Scenario for C#,asp.net,MOSS

Post by SheeKish » Wed Apr 23, 2008 12:04 pm

Hi,

My husband has got job in ten days at last after sending 500 applications per day in all leading jobsites .

Landed date: 13-April
Interviews Attended(Face to Face): 15,16,22 April
Telephonic: 17,21,23 April
Job offer:got 1 in London on 22-April, waiting for 2 more.
Few Locations u can search for C# openings: anywhere in London,Reading,Leeds,Bristol,Cambridge, manchester,Oxford,Bedfordshire,Hertfordshire

Moral:
- Be patient dont loose hope after negative interview results whether u r 3+ or 13+ years exp. Its really difficult to say what London employers need from their perspective ...this is totally based on employers requirements(some ask prev technical projects, some theoritical knowledge, some ask case studies, some ask for front end JS,XML,AJAX),ur skillsets,ur hope,ur hardwork.
- Be negotiable for ur first job in UK(do not expect market rates for eg: 400 for 6+ years c#,.net)
- If you need immediate high pay jobs, apply for contract positions(friends who applied only for contract they also got job in a week but its insecure). If you are looking for branded companies, secure jobs nd can wait for minimum 3 weeks to join, apply for permanent jobs.
-Please come down to search jobs quickly..u need a uk address and a uk telephone number/sim for fastening ur job search.

All the best for job search!!

Regards,
Shee Kish

Hi ,

I got a job finally thanks to god
My timelines are

Got EC 14 Mar
Came TO UK 3 Apr
Interviews given 7
Offers 2 and 2 more were expected but since I already accepted an offer I told the others I was not interested.
Time taken to find a job 1 month exactly

Advice: Even though my CV was very strong and got me interviews every week I thought I was unlucky not to get a job. My advice would be forget about how you give interviews in India here just take a chill pill and go to an interview take it as if you are the one selecting the firm and not the other way around and you will be through.

I also thought of sharing my experience. I also got two permanent job offers this week. It took me near about 1 month 1 week to get offers. I gave near about 12-13 interviews.I have seen here many people struggling to schedule interviews here but not in my case.Even this week also i have 3 more F2F interviews scheduled. I felt that if agents find that we have all the essentials required for the job , then we can secure a call.
I posted less messages in this group but i was reading every relevant message.
Coming to Uk was a easy decision for me as i have lot of relatives in UK and i was single. I was losing lot of money in travelling.
Searching here is tough and i have lot of friend who are frustrated here.
Even i was also losing my confidence , was not able to get offers.I used to give lot of interviews in india but when we are working we can ignore it. Being jobless and missing an opportunity really hurts.

I lost couple of oppurtunity in my first week as i do not know how to give interview. I use to explain them what was asked. Like in india it is question/answers.
Communication skill is more important then technical skill here.
One feedback for me was that i speak fast and employer was not able to understand me.
Calling agents is of no use, if they are interested u will get calls.

Hi Friends,

It took me 70 days to find a job here after landing here on HSMP, I have 5 years of experience in IT in India. If I have to do it again, I won't take this risk. I mean I will not leave my well paid job back home and risk everything without a job offer here. I understand that there are very good chances that I could have be left jobless here for a long time.

I am not trying to discourage anyone, before you come here
1. Do get in touch with someone who is in the same technologly, and find out the odds of finding a job.
2. If your tech is a niche skills(Unlike java,.NET), expect no more than 1 or 2 interviews per month, and you have to be very good at what you do to get through them(unless you get lucky).
3. Most important, be prepared for a exit strategy, incase things don't go your way.

Good luck!
