Entering UK - child has pending UK passport application

My family and I are due to return (from the USA) to the UK in July. Our youngest only had a US passport, so we applied for her UK citizenship and passport 12 weeks ago, the stated processing time being 6-8 weeks.

Unfortunately it seems that the passport office is in complete meltdown (e.g. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politic ... elays.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -risk.html) and we've been told her passport likely won't be ready in time.

So, question: should we then apply for a visa for our daughter to enter the UK (as this is a permanent move, tourist visa is inappropriate/maybe illegal?), or do we enter on her US passport and simply explain her UK application is pending?

p.s. another complication is we sent her US passport as "supporting documentation" as part of her UK application...so all of the above presumes we can get at least her US passport back from Durham in time

Is she already British and you're just applying for her British Passport? Consider a CoE (click) as an alternative. Although, I doubt the Passport will be much longer.

The details are that my wife and I are both British citizens, but have been in the us for the last 6.5 years. Our daughter is a us citizen, holding a us passport.

She has the right to British citizenship (by descent) and the current process our pending application for this along with her first British passport.

Just to complete the picture, she also has a sister with dual UK/USA citizenship.
