Entering Turkey with an Emergency Travel Document UK

Post by ashlyjohn » Thu Jun 04, 2026 5:56 am

URGENT - Has anyone travelled to Turkey on a British Emergency Travel Document? 🚨
I really need help from anyone who has experience with this!
Here's my situation:
- I'm a British national living in Hong Kong
- I lost my passport and whilst I found it, it has since been cancelled
- I've been issued a British Emergency Travel Document (ETD)
- I'm travelling to Bodrum, Turkey on 10th June for my bachelorette trip — I am the bride!
- I have 10 friends travelling with me and this trip cannot be cancelled
The confusing part — I'm getting completely conflicting advice:
✅ British Consulates in Turkey, Hong Kong AND the UK have ALL categorically confirmed I do NOT need a visa and my ETD is sufficient to enter Turkey
✅ The official UK Government ETD website confirms Turkey accepts entry, exit and transit on a British ETD
✅ The British Consulate has confirmed this information comes directly from Turkish immigration
✅ British nationals don't need a visa for Turkey anyway
❌ However, one person at the Turkish Consulate in London said I need a visa when travelling on an ETD
❌ The Turkish Consulate in Hong Kong said they don't know
The British Consulate advised that Turkish Consulates are primarily there to assist Turkish citizens and may not always be familiar with the rules for British nationals — and that the information they provide comes directly from Turkish immigration authorities.
Has anyone:
✈️ Travelled to Turkey on a British Emergency Travel Document?
✈️ Had any issues at check-in or at Turkish immigration with an ETD?
✈️ Been asked for anything additional beyond the ETD itself?
Any real life experience would be so incredibly helpful right now. I'm trying to travel to my own bachelorette and the conflicting advice is causing so much unnecessary stress! 😭
Thank you so much in advance 🙏

This isn't usually an experience that most people have. However, here are factors you have to consider.
An ETD cannot be used like a normal passport. It's mostly valid for a single trip. Example, you're travelling from Hong Kong back to the UK and flying through Turkey. You might be allowed to stop over there for a few days, have your party and be on your merry way back to the UK.
I seriously doubt if they would allow you to fly in from Hong Kong - Turkey - Hong Kong.

Normally, the ETD would be taking off you as soon as you enter the UK at POE.
No sin in failing, you just have to try and try again!
