Extend my Visa - Did I leave it too late

I had the assumption that as long as you apply before your expiry of your Visa - you are alright.

With my Visa expiring 1/2/2011 , I am planning to send in the form around the 10/1/2011 after I get paid.

Is this too late for me to apply?

Also I am assuming that it will cost £1000 for me to apply in the UK?
