extending a student visa from inside the UK

Post by nurmiani » Sun Jan 09, 2022 9:37 am

My grandson came to the UK in 2015 aged 11 on a tier 4 (child) student visa.
In 2018 he extended this visa from inside the UK to cover the GCSE stage he was then embarking on.
This summer (2022) he will have finished his GCSEs and wants to embark on A level courses in September. He will need to extend his permission to cover this. We are not yet sure whether he will do A levels with his existing sponsor school or whether he will change to a new sponsor.
1. Can he extend his visa from inside the UK (preferable) or does he need to return to Indonesia and do it there ?
2. Does (1) change if he moved to a new sponsor ?

Thanks for any help you can be

You can refer him to this general information from UKCISA about who can apply in the UK, and how to do it:
https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/Information-- ... -in-the-UK

But if he needs individual advice about applying, you need to refer him to the university or college that is sponsoring the visa.
I do not give immigration advice. I refer you to Immigration Rules, guidance, other online content and to your sponsor.

As indicated in the link @sah10406 provided your grandson can indeed apply in the UK for a new permission to continue his studies. He'll need a CAS irrespective of who his sponsor will be for the A-levels.

According to your post your grandson will be 18 this year so he may have to apply for a Student rather than a Child Student permission.

The age range for the Child Student permission is 4-18 and for the Student permission from 16 upwards.

It is important for your grandson to obtain a new CAS and apply for a new permission before his current one expires.
