first infant passport/registration for a child as a British born overseas

Post by Inderjeet02 » Tue May 02, 2023 3:47 am

Hello all,

Thank you for your kind support regarding my naturalisation process and apologies for the delayed response.

I have an issue regarding "either to register my child (3 months old) as a British citizen or to apply for his first British passport" as I am planning to get him into the UK.

My Details; With help of members in this group, I got Naturalised as British citizen and have a British Passport. I live in the UK.

My spouse details; She holds an Indian passport. We got married "after I got Naturalised as a British citizen" and have a child.

Queries;

1. Should I first register my baby boy as British in India or is it possible to apply for his first British passport without registering please?

2. Can I register/apply passport online from the UK as it would be easier to do so?

3. What documents do I need while applying to register as a British or for his first British passport please?

4. Does my Child need an Indian passport before applying to register as a British or for his first British passport please?

Thanks in advance

As child was born after you becoming British, he is a British citizen by descent; you should either apply for his British passport in India (which takes about 6 months at this point) or apply for an Indian passport, place CoE-RoA in it (takes less time), get him to UK and apply for British passport there.

Was the child born on or after the date of your naturalisation certificate?

If yes, the child can apply directly for a British passport.

The British passport will need to be applied for where the child is currently located, as it is the child that is the applicant, even though you are applying on their behalf.

If your child is currently on the Subcontinent, be aware that first British passports for British citizen children can take six months to a year over there.
