Hi wonderful folks. Perhaps I’m panicking for no reason. But, I received my first British passport today. I had sent a certificate of naturalisation and my other nationality passport to them to get this British passport. But the passport arrived and the documents I sent haven’t. Is this normal.
Second question. Am I expected to keep this certificate even though I have the passport? Could someone just clarify how this works. What would I need the certificate for going forward? Or does HO expect it to be returned like the BRP was.
Many thanks.

Yes - documents are sent separately, and will take some more days to arrive.

Absolutely keep the certificate!!! It's the only document that confers British citizenship - the passport is a travel document and not absolute proof of citizenship (passports have been issued in error in the past, and then cancelled). And don't laminate the certificate. Nothing to do with the BRP. Keep it safely. I'm always worried when people sometimes post if they can just throw it away - it cost you £1500 after all.
Many thanks.

For example if your passport is expired you can use the certificate for right of work purposes.
HMPO can and sometimes do ask for the certificate when applying for subsequent passports.

Ok great. Thanks for letting me know! I’m guessing they will issue a text or tracking number for the other documents?

Also to add to the above - if your children are born abroad for example, the certificate (not the passport) will act as proof that they can get British nationality by descent. So absolutely keep it.

Ok. Thank you very much! I’m guessing give it a couple weeks for other documents and if nothing comes in get in touch with them?
