General Dental Council (GDC) registration under EC rights

Post by toabetterchange » Sat Sep 17, 2011 12:27 am

I am not a doctor but a dentist and the family member of an EU citizen, I have seen that the GMC doesnot discriminate whether the family member has studied his/her diploma, it doesnot need to be a EU degree.

Why is that the GDC in the case of dentists doesnot want to exempt the family members of EEA national from taking dental exams(ORE) but the Medical Council (GMC) does it?

Could you or anyone please advise what to do in this kind of situation? family members of EEA has the right to work but if an authority doesnt want to recognise the "foreign studies" , how can a family member start working? where is that right? knowing that another regulatory UK authority does it( the GMC) and others not.

Hi, I saw that you posted on the GMC thread and moved to a new thread. I thought I might comment because I've read a lot about these things in recent months.

The individual regulations of the UK governing bodies originate in the EU law which supports free work/movement for citizens and their families. These state that if someone (EU citizen or someone benefiting from EC Rights e.g. partner/spouse of an EU citizen) has had their qualifications accepted in one EU country, then they must be accepted in others. (i.e. recognised in France, can work in Germany, UK etc.)

I think it would be more helpful if you would provide some details about yourself i.e.
- your nationality and your partner's
- where you are living/working currently (and your partner)
- where you qualified from and where you are registered to practice

These details should pretty much answer the question of which category you fall in and whether you can outright register with the GDC or have to pass the ORE. (Same details go for GMC tbh)
