British Subject with Right of Abode in UK

Post by TinTinTin » Fri Feb 15, 2008 12:51 pm

Hello,
Can someone clarify - 'British Subject with Right of Abode in UK' mean ? Does an ILR qualify under this ?
British citizens travelling to France
If you are a British Citizen or British Subject with Right of Abode in the United Kingdom, you will not need a visa to enter France. Other British passport holders should confirm the current entry requirements with this consulate general.

United Kindom is part of the European Union but not of the Schengen agreement which includes, Austria,Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. All these countries, except Norway and Iceland are European Union Members.

Therefore british subjects cannot go to France with an expired passport. They must produce a valid british passport. Driving licences are not accepted. All British passport holders require a valid passport. There is no minimum passport validity requirement but you should ensure that your passport is valid for the proposed period of your stay.

A travel insurance is always advisable when travelling abroad

No, an ILR holder is not a British Subject nor does he/she have a Right of Abode in the UK. They have an indefinite leave to remain, that's all.

No. Right of Abode isn't the same as Indefinite Leave to Remain. If you are a foreign national with ILR, you could still be served with a deportation order, or lose your indefinite leave if you were away from the UK for more than 2 years. You don't have right of abode.

Yeah, a leave to remain is like a permission to remain. It is not a right to remain.
