Institute for Government report on Immigration post-Brexit

Institute for Government report on Immigration post-Brexit
This report presents a six-point plan for managing migration after Brexit:
  • The Government must agree clear objectives for the new immigration system after Brexit.
  • The Home Secretary must update Parliament each year on how far those objectives are met.
  • Immigration policy should be based on an understanding of the social and economic role that migrants play in the UK, rather than net migration targets. The Home Secretary should publish a comprehensive data strategy to make this analysis possible.
  • The Home Secretary should legislate to simplify immigration rules.
  • The Migration Advisory Committee should be more independent of the Home Office, reflecting its increasing importance.
  • The Home Secretary should immediately launch the review of the department that was promised last year.
This Twitter thread by one of the report's authors is very critical of the Home Office and suggests immigration should be removed from the Home Office's remit.

As an aside, I would highly recommend following the IfG on Twitter (and other social media) and attending their free talks in central London to understand the implications and the work behind-the-scenes of Brexit and other policy and constitutional developments.

Hi,

Could someone explain to me what the new points based immigration system is.Does it have an official name?
Does it mean that a non EU person currently under Tier2 ICT visa can switch to this new category without any cooling off period and finally apply for ILR?
Does this new system replace any of the present visa Tiers?

Thanks in advance

Nothing has been enacted yet! There won't be EU/non-EU routes, everyone will be under a points system, Tiers will remain. I don't think the aim is to make it easier for immigrants, wherever they come from.
