Triple citizenship

Post by piglet » Thu Sep 27, 2007 8:44 pm

Out of interest, does UK allow triple citizenship.

E.g. someone already has two and is applyng for the British passport?

Or do you have to renounce one of them?

Thank you

The UK has no problem if any other nationality is held. Accordingly it is not an issue if more than one other nationality is held.

Yes it does, my daughter has American, Irish and British citizenship. You'd have to check the citizenship laws of the other countries to make sure they all allow dual (or more) citizenship, but from the UK end it's perfectly ok.

Thank you so much for your replies,

I just handed over my application for naturalization here, but I already have two other passports, one acquired by birth, one by previous marriage.
I did not think about this until last night, when I thought :"Damn, what if I have to renounce one of the previous citizenships, I don't really want to do that."

The two countries I have do allow dual nationalities, but I was not sure if they allow triple. I was not sure if they perhaps, allow dual, but don't allow triple.
So, thank you again, I hope it is fine then.

What countries are they?

Countries either allow multiple citizenships or they don't. What they do not do is specifiy the number of citizenships you may or may not have. In this sense it is incorrect to refer to countries allowing "dual" or "triple" citizenship.

Sorry to be pedantic, but I think it's an important point.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

Until you go through the ceremony or there is a moment you officially accept citizenship of a country so until that happens and provided you are approved, then you are not in violation I suggest you use the time to research the risks of obtaiing the 3rd nationality

Thank you, all

To answer one of the questions, one of my nationalities is from former Yugoslavia, one is Australian and I just applied for the British.

I intend to maintain strong ties with all of these countries, that's why I would not want to renounce any nationality. I intend to live in Britain for many years to come, but maybe in my old age I would like to live in Australia.

I don't know about the risks of three citizenships, I just see the benefits. For example, with IRL, after two years of being away from the country, the person looses their ILR. Even though I don't plan to live anywhere else (my husband and I own the house jointly here), you never know in life. Also, I have strong ties with all three countries, so I would like to keep all three nationalities, if it is possible. Even though I can travel with no problems with my Australian passport (e.g. I rarely need visas to visit most countries), Australia is not in the EU, so I still have to queue at Heathrow.
Anyway, we will see what happens, I really thought that having 2 or 3 nationalities would not be the problem, but I wanted to see what you very helpful people thought.
Thank you again,
Piglet

There is no problem at all with the Australian part: Australia has no restrictions on Australian citizens holding other citizenships and the fact that you might have three citizenships after you become British will not mean that you cease to be an Australian citizen.

As an Australian citizen, you must use an Australian passport to enter and leave Australia. (The UK does not have an analogous requirement, although it will obviously be easier, and make sense, for you to use a British passport to travel in and out of the UK, and you will need to do that in practice if you are living in the UK.)

I don't know what the situation is with your other nationality with respect to dual/multiple nationality. However, it is very unlikely that there is any distinction between two, three or more nationalities per se. Someone else here might know more...

No problem with Australia. Which country in former Yugoslavia is it?

The former Yugoslav Republic is Serbia. I know that they also allow dual nationality.

Certainly when I travel to Australia, I will enter and exit with my Australian passport, Britain with British and Ser. with Serbian, this is understandable, and also much easier.

I don't know why, but I have read on some sites that some countries "frown" on more then 2 nationalities, even though they allow dual. But since I am not a refugee nor an economic immigrant, I really don't want to renounce any of the three. I lived in Australia for over 10 years, have many close friends there and my husband is also the holder of British and Australian passports. And I love my birth country, plus I really like Britain and the way of life here, so it would be really hard to have to give up one of them.

Thank you so much for your replies, I just wanted to find out whether ther is any distinction between dual and triple nationality. I will let you all know how I went when I receive the reply from Home Office.
