Voting in the UK GE

Post by ID15072 » Tue Jun 18, 2019 9:22 am

I have a question that is bugging me

Who is eligible to vote at a UK general election?
To vote at the UK general election you must be registered to vote and:

18 years of age or over on polling day
be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
be resident at an address in the UK (or a UK citizen living abroad who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years)
not be legally excluded from voting

I moved to the UK using my EU passport and now have settled status but I also have a Commonwealth passport, am I eligible to vote in GE or is that only possible if I would have entered and got residency using the Commonwealth passport/visa/etc?

You are free to vote if you are a commonwealth citizen and legally resident in the UK.

It does not make a distinction between what visa or immigration route you are on. It is based on being resident and a commonwealth citizen.

If you are legally resident (the residency requirement excludes visitors) in the UK on any route (whether UK Immigration or EEA Regulations) AND are a Commonwealth citizen, you can vote in a General Election in the UK, provided of course, that you are registered to vote.
I am not a lawyer or immigration advisor. My statements/comments do not constitute legal advice. E&OE. Please do not PM me for advice.

Thank you - I thought that if I entered the country as an EU national and obtained residency (Settled Status) on those grounds I couldn't use my Commonwealth citizenship rights (i.e. voting).

I will ask the electoral registry people and see what they say... it'd be good to vote in GE as well.

The 'electoral registry people' are not immigration advisors or trained in the vast number of immigration routes.

You simply need to apply online to register on the electoral roll. They do not ask for proof of your immigration status to be sent.
