work permit for chinese builder

Post by Rebecca22 » Mon Oct 24, 2005 8:36 am

How does a group of expert chinese construction workers get work permits to the UK? A UK based employer wants to bring over 30 of these guys who have worked on similar projects all over the world for him. They have trade certificates from school + ten years of experience but not NVQ level 3. Does anyone have experience in this field?
Thanks

Highly unlikely to get workpermits..

The UK employer should seek advise from WP(UK)..

initially though the www.workingintheuk.gov.uk is a good starting point

Wow - thats a really fast reply. Thank you.

Do you think it would be possible to get them over an an apprentiship course that would lead to them getting an NVQ 3?

Yes. But they must satisfy Student Visa rules

But what is the point of an apprentice course if they are so highly skilled?

There must be other construction workers who come over to UK? How do these people get the permit to work?
Have you seen other situations like this? I spoke to an immigration lawyer but they dont have any good ideas?

Rebecca, back to basic principles of Work Permits .... the employer needs to find it impossible to fill a vacancy from within the UK, or indeed from anywhere else in the EEA. Is that really the case with the workers you are talking about? For example, do they possess skills ... which you need ... not commonly possessed by building workers in the UK or elsewhere in the EEA? Or at least is there a great shortage of people possessing those particular skills and therefore employers find it difficult to recruit?

Apart from the above, I suspect that the UK can get all the building workers that it needs either from the UK, or certainly from elsewhere in the EEA, and therefore it is unlikely that you will get your Work Permits.

Rebecca,

If you can prove that expertise of Chinese builders is needed for a very specialist job (ex. something very specific to chinese culture) and you cannot find people with equivalent skills in the UK then they have a very good chance getting work permit.

Hi Rebecca.
Most migrant builders in the UK are either from Eastern Europe, are Commonwealth citizens on working holidaymaker visas, or they are working illegally. There are a lot of the latter. If you are not an EEA national or from a Commonwealth country, then your chances of finding building work legally are very small.
