Working Holiday Visa to Work Permit??

Post by danii » Tue Apr 25, 2006 7:21 pm

Hi, I am new to this forum, and this is my first post. I found this site when searching for info on getting a work permit. I've been reading through the posts and it seems like you lot really know what you're talking about, so hopefully someone can help me :)

I am here in the UK on a working holiday visa. I am only allowed to work for 12 months. I am in a graduate position in London (not listed as one of the "shortage" proffesions though.) I am only entitled to work until November. The HR department at work told me that they spoke to the Home Office who said it wouldn't be worth applying due to the difficulty of converting from a working holiday visa. They have successfully applied before for many people on Student visas.

How difficult is it to convert to a work permit from WHV? The home office website seems to say that it is only possible if you're becoming a nurse, teacher, actuary, etc...

What options do I have? Has anyone of you been in this position before?

Thanks a lot for your help :)

What is the nature of your profession? It may not be difficult if you are in the shortage skills list.
If not your company has to follow all the standard procedure for getting a work permit.

Thanks for your reply neilroy.
I am working in endowment complaints, which is not a shortage profession. Am I correct in thinking that my employer will need to show that there were no suitable EU applicants etc?
How likely is it that I will get a work permit if my work does this?
I was told by HR that it will be very difficult and on this basis they were not going to proceed, even though they do want to sponsor me.
I want to try to convince them that it will be worth going through with it, so need to know what my chances are like.

Thanks :)

Hi,
Chaces of getting rejection very high in this case. Your employer has to provide all the doucuments including ads in national newspaper for the job, copies of all the cvs of the people that have applied for the job, a letter showing the justification for them to chose you, their financial history and any other relevant paper work.
If your HR is willing to go for this, then may be there is a chance otherwise other route is to apply yourself for HSMP.
