German Student Visa

We have a Russian friend studying in Berlin, and he said he's off to Paris next weekend. So I wonder is a student visa from one Schengen state valid in all? At least for travel?

Seems to be the case for the German Work Permit.

If so, and it's seems to be the case, isn't it annoying how arrogant the UK and Eire are (and Denmark!) by opting out of Schengen.
